Since Macedonian officially was
not declared a language until 1944, one must trace publications from the territory
of Macedonia before 1944 and these publications may be found in the bibliographies
of several different countries such as Former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. See the
pages entitled National Bibliography for Former Yugoslavia
and National Bibliography for Bulgaria for annotations
of resources that may be helpful for locating Macedonian publications. Even before
1944 there were some bibliographies concerning Macedonian publications, but in
1950 a systematic, comprehensive Yugoslav national bibliography, which included
publications from Macedonia, began to appear under the title Bibliografija
Jugoslavije. In addition, the National Library in Skopje has published
since 1951 a separate national bibliography Makedonska bibliografija
which records only Macedonian works. A few retrospective bibliographies for Macedonia
have also been produced.
A brief
survey in English of Macedonian publishing trends appeared in a special issue
of Slavic & East European Information Resources, 1:2/3, 2000 which
is entitled "Publishing in Yugoslavia's Successor States". One of the
articles is George Mitrevski's "Publishing in Macedonia". For further
reading on Macedonian bibliography see the article entitled "Bibliografija"
in Enciklopedija Jugoslavije, volume 1 [UIUC Call Number: Yugoslav Reference
914.97 En16]. One short section of it is devoted to Macedonia.

The
website of the National and University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" in Skopje
has links to Macedonian online catalogs, including two very important ones: the
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) of the National Library and COBIB.MK (Vzaemna
bibliografsko-katalozna baza), a union catalog of Macedonian libraries. Both catalogs
are part of the COBISS system like the catalogs of the other former republics
of Yugoslavia so the interfaces are all the same. Computerized
cataloging in the Library started at the beginning of 1989 and the database
contains over 110,000 bibliographic records covering monographs,
serials, dissertations, and articles from journals that are published in Macedonia
(FYR). The Macedonian National Bibliography (MNB)
also is a part of the Library's bibliographic database. The interface
allows for extensive flexibility in searching with simple, intermediate and advanced
searching screens. For example, one may search by keyword, author, title, subject
or ISSN/ISBN. It is also possible to limit a search by date or language. The interfaces
are in both Macedonian and English and searching does not necessitate Cyrillic
fonts. See the image below taken from the National Library's OPAC to recognize
the COBISS interface and examine a record for a book by Blaze Koneski.
Another
database available as part of the COBISS system is a cinematographic
catalog from 1895- present. The description from the catalog's information
section reads as follows: "DATAFILM is a factographical and bibliographic
data-file on the Macedonian, former Yugoslav and world-wide film art
and industry.
DATAFILM includes filmographical data originating from already cataloged films,
other film footage and video recordings of Macedonian, former Yugoslav and world
film production as well as from other relevant documentation sources (screenplays,
contracts, catalogs, propaganda materials, filmographies etc.). Data entry is
done both in Macedonian and English language".

Compiled by scholars at the Macedonian
National Library, this retrospective bibliography of Macedonian
books covers over 2900 works up to 1944. A more detailed description of
the territory involved is as follows: books published in geographic and ethnic
Macedonia until 1913; modern-day Macedonia until 1944; Aegean Macedonia until
1949; works emanating from the Macedonian revolutionary-liberation movement published
in Sofia, Belgrade, etc., till 1944. It includes a separate list of Hebraica published
in Thessaloniki 16th-18th centuries. The entries are arranged alphabetically by

a work by L.S. Karavelov.

of all series from 1970- present]
This national bibliography
covers Macedonian books, music, and articles from the
end of 1944 through the present day. Over the years the title has changed
format and undergone several title changes, but the initial part of the title
has always been Makedonska bibliografija. The compilations are based on
items received as a result of the depository laws. The first volume of this set,
1944-1949, by Nada Petrova is the first Macedonian bibliography compiled using
modern bibliographic methods. Each subsequent volume covers two years of publications
and is divided into sections for books (1.del) and articles (2.del) from Macedonian
periodicals. Within these two section the citations are arranged by subject. There
are indexes for authors and a list of periodicals from which the articles were
culled. In 1972 this title became an annual publication instead of a biennial,
but the University of Illinois does not hold any volumes after 1968-1969. In 1980
the title split into two separate serials called Makedonska bibliografija.
1. serija, Monografski publikacii and Makedonska bibliografija. 2. serija,
Statii i prilozi. In 1993 a third series emerged which covers periodicals,
Makedonska bibliografija. 3. serija, Seriski publikacii. The first volume
of series 3 was retrospective covering 1944/1984, the second 1985, and the third,
1986-1993. For more recent years the national bibliography is part of the online
catalog described above. See the entry below for several items that appeared in
the 1954-1955 volume under the heading "Macedonian literature".
