  • The Dictionary of Substances and Their Effects  --  The web-based version of the (1999) 2nd edition of The Dictionary of Substances and their Effects (DOSE) published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in. DOSE contains data on chemicals of environmental concern. DOSE Database is searchable by chemical name, formula, CAS Registry number, and keyword. Each entry includes information on chemical and physical properties, toxicity, environmental fate, legislation, etc.
  • Equine Multilingual Dictionary (Abridged Online Edition) (English/French/Spanish/German)  --   Abridged online version of the 1997 2nd abridged print edition.

Language Translation Programs - There are currently many free web-based versions available. A sampling are given below:

  1. AltaVista Translations - Translate text or a website from English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.
  2. FreeTranslation.com - Translate text or web pages. Unlike some of the other translators listed here, this site supports the use of diacritics.
  3. Translating the Internet - A free service, through which you can send or receive e-mail in nine different languages or translate websites or text.

Pharmacology

  • FDA Approved Animal Drug Products: The 2006 Green Book Online  -- Updated monthly, the FDA's Green Book provides a list of all animal drug products approved for safety and effectiveness, as well as the information regarding patents held for the animal drug and methods of use submitted to the FDA by the drug sponsors. This information is mandated by the Generic Animal Drug and Patent Restoration Act to be made available to the public. The 2000 Green Book is available online in PDF or HTML formats. FDA Approved Animal Drug Products can also be searched as a database.


  • * Clinical Pharmacology -- Clinical Pharmacology contains current, concise and clinically-relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs. Search drugs by generic or brand names. Clinical Pharmacology is made up of Drug Monograph and Patient Education Records. Drug Monographs include description, mechanism of action, and pharmacokinetics. Patient Education Records contains information on the purpose of the medication, what the doctor should know before prescribing it, how it should be taken, consequences of missed doses, other drug interactions, and side effects, etc. Available in English or Spanish.

  6. Manual of Standards for Diagnostic Tests & Vaccines (3rd edition)  --  An OIE publication.
  7. PubMed Central  --  A repository for peer-reviewed life science journal articles. Established in January 2000 by the National Institutes of Health. This repository will eventually be joined by a pre-print archive.

  • Altweb - Alternatives to Animal Testing Web Site. Contains links to alternatives news, journals, information, and resources on the Internet. Features an English-language index to ALTEX contents and article summaries.


  • ALTEX - Alternatives to Animal Experiments is the official journal of MEGAT (Mitteleuropäische Gesellschaft für Alternativen zu Tierversuchen), the the Middle European Society for Alternatives to Testing in Animals. This is a German site, with limited English translation. For full text of the articles, use the 'Kontact' button to email the editor (Redakteur) and request a PDF file.

  • VETSEEK - Tool produced by the Free University of Berlin's Veterinary Medicine Library: Indexes veterinary online dissertations, theses, and abstracts of dissertations of printed versions (mainly from Germany). A multilingual site.


  • ViFa Vet - From the TiHo Hannover Library in Germany, contains a number of various resources specific to veterinarians in English.


  • Veterinary pages of Intute - A free online service providing with access to the web resources for education and research, evaluated and selected by a network of subject specialists. This service was created by a network of UK universities and partners and formerly known as VetGate.
