Wireless and Walk-Up Computing
Wireless
- Wireless internet access is available on the entire upper level of the Undergrad, and most of the lower level.
- A Campus NetID may be used to log on to the network.
- Public wirless is also available. Public wireless is intended for visitors who have no formal affiliation with the University. With a wireless-enabled laptop, visitors can connect to the Internet using a web browser and can send and receive email using an off-campus email server. Information on getting started is available on the CITES UI Public Wireless website http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/publicwireless/index.html.
- The UIUCnet Wireless Access page describes how to log in, and how wireless works. The CITES Help Desk can help troubleshoot problems as well: (217) 244-7000.
- A map with locations to other campus wireless locations is also available.
Wireless Troubleshooting Procedures
Solution for refreshing Quick Connect pages
Based on CITES Help Desk Solution # 4726
Title: CITES - Networking, Wireless, QuickConnect, Bluestem login page loops after authenticating
Resolution:
To troubleshoot the situation where the login page loops:
- Check the bookmarked URL they are trying to access and make sure it does not start with https://
Patrons are usually automatically redirected to it after logging in. Also try using an alternative URL, such as google.com. - For looping login pages other than Quickconnect, confirm that the URL can be accessed by a computer with a known good wireless configuration.
- Have the customer quit the browser and then reopen it. This may stop the looping.
- Try using an alternate browser to see if the problem persists across both browsers. This could isolate the issue (to the offending browser) or indicate a wider problem with the wireless system or the website.
- Try configuring the VPN and connecting.
- If they are not still not able to browse the Internet, there may be a wireless service issue.
Escalating an unresolved wireless issue:
- Check to see if they know of others having a similar problem.
- Obtain the IP address of their network connection, the time and location they are having difficulty at.
Windows:
- Click: Start > Run > type: cmd then press Enter.
- At the command prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter
- Open the Terminal application Applications > Utilities > Terminal
- Type ifconfig and press Enter
- Record the operating system and service pack level of the machine if applicable (for example, Windows XP service pack 2; Mac OS 10.4.1).
- Record this information in an email or chat request and send to the CITES Help Desk.
Walk-Up Computing
- The Undergraduate Library has a number of network jacks available for students to plug in their own laptops and get online.
- An ethernet cable and a campus NetID are required to log on to the network. Cables can be checked out at the front desk on the upper level of the Undergrad.
- More information about logging in and using Walk-Up Computing can be found on the CITES Walk-Up page.
- The CITES Help Desk can help troubleshoot many common problems: (217) 244-7000.
