Undergraduate Student Needs Assessment for Library Text Messaging Service Development

1. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this research is to understand what services Undergraduate Students need for accessing library services through text message. Services to be developed are for the convenience of undergraduate students. Ultimately the purpose of this study is to create a library to which students will be more connected.
2. Procedures: You are asked to read over this consent form which explains your voluntary consent to take part in an Internet based survey. If you do not wish to participate in this survey, please do not follow the link at the end of this consent form.
Should you choose to participate in this survey simply proceed to read through this consent form, click on the link at the end of this page, and answer the brief survey that follows. This survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
3. Discomforts and Risks: Should you choose to participate in this survey you may experience a minimal level of discomfort, similar to what you may experience when you complete Internet based quizzes or assignments.
4. Benefits: The data that results from this survey will allow the University Library to gain insights into the preferences of Undergraduate Students seeking to utilize library services through their cell phones. This data will be used to formulate directions for service development and will be dispersed to the library and information science community through conference presentations or journal articles. Future librarians will benefit from knowing how best to craft services for mobile technology.
5. Statement of Confidentiality: Personal response data resulting from this survey will be kept confidential. Netids are only kept only for purposes of contacting gift card winners, after which time they are discarded.

7. Compensation: Your Netid will be entered into a drawing for a $25 iTunes gift card. 379 total responses will be gathered for this survey with four iTunes gift cards being given away at random. The chances of winning a gift card are approximately 1 in 95. Note that only completed surveys will be entered into the drawing. A completed survey is one in which questions one through three are answered.
8. Voluntariness: Participation in this survey is voluntary. You may discontinue at anytime. The decision to participate, decline, or withdraw from participation will have no effect on your grades, status, or future relations with the University of Illinois.
9. Dissemination: This research will be disseminated in conference proceedings or library peer-reviewed journals and with librarians at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
