UIUC Library Staff Development and Training

Policy regarding time for taking courses in the University

The Library is committed to employee training and development programs and strongly encourages supervisors to support their staff members who want to take courses in the University.  There have been several questions raised recently about the Library’s policy regarding time for taking courses in the University.

If your supervisor asks you to take a course, you do not have to make up the time.

If your supervisor does not ask you to take a course but agrees to let you take it during your scheduled working hours you must make up the time and your supervisor must agree to the makeup time schedule.   Time spent in class must be made up, regardless of the subject matter.  With supervisor's approval, you are allowed to take only one course per semester that interferes with your regular work schedule.

Supervisors have the right to deny your request to take a course that interferes with your regular work schedule when there is a demonstrated operational need.

Course enrollment forms are available in the Library HR office and must be completed for all courses you plan to take that occur during your regular work schedule.
See the HR page at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/administration/human/forms.html
