Remote Access to UIUCLIBRARY Server Resources

You must have the following:

System requirements are Windows NT, 2000, or XP. Windows 95, 98, and ME will not work.

Either the CITES VPN or CITES dialup connection must be used. Please follow the instructions given on either website to configure the connection properly. If you have problems, the CITES helpdesk can assist you.

Further configuration:

Some additional configuration makes for an easier time when connecting to a particular server. Please configure the WINS server addresses on your machine. Depending on the OS, the location is somewhat varied. Typically you should try to look under the "My Network Places" or "Network Neighborhood" properties, then choose properties for your connection and TCP/IP properties. The WINS settings are under an "advanced" button in 2000 and XP and under one of the tabs for NT. The servers should be 128.174.5.30 and 128.174.36.251. In this window is also where there is a setting for "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP". This must be selected.

Accessing particular library resources:

The network shares you most commonly have available to you are as follows:

  • Groupfiles, also the G drive \\libsys5.library.uiuc.edu\groupfiles
  • Home directory, also the H drive \\libsys5.library.uiuc.edu\username$
  • Web pages \\cooper.library.uiuc.edu\deptwebshare
To connect to a network drive, click on the start menu and choose "run". type in the above bold line depending on the share you wish to connect to. You should get a prompt for you username and password. For your username, type in your Active Directory account and user: UIUC\username your password is your Active Directory password.

*note* the italicized items need to be replaced with your user specific information. The $ is also supposed to be included after your username in the home directory connection.

Some security issues:

Since the setting "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is needed to connect to network shares on the library servers, any drives you have shared on your computer are also made available over a TCP/IP connection. This poses a problem if you have "File and Printer Sharing" enabled on your computer. If you do not need to share a file or printers from your computer, uninstall or disable this service.

Using ZoneAlarm or some other personal firewall program is also an option to protect your system while connected to the internet. If you have such a firewall in place, there may be some settings to configure for the connection to work properly. For example, if you are using ZoneAlarm, open ZoneAlarm, click on "Security", click the "Advanced" button, click the "Add" button, choose "Add Host/Site" and in the "Host/Site" box type "128.174.1.98". Perform the same steps for any server you wish to connect to ie: "libsys5.library.uiuc.edu" or "www.library.uiuc.edu". This allows the server to send back information to your machine, including the authentication request. Consult the documentation with your personal firewall software if you are having further difficulties connecting. Hardware firewalls or internet connection sharing routers may also prevent connection unless properly configured
