Why So Many Accounts?

This page describes the many different accounts and their roles with respect to the Library.

Your University of Illinois NetId

First you have to understand what your University NetID is and how it works. This page at CITES describes what the NetID does. Another useful page at CITES describes the various accounts that are set up when they issue you a NetID.

The important thing to remember is: CITES administers the NetID and not the Library System's Office, so any problems with your NetId should be directed to CITES.

The Library Systems Office tries to use NetIDs as a standard for other accounts that need to be used in the Library.  Voyager accounts typically will follow the same format as a NetID.  We now use the Campus Active Directory to log in to the UIUC domain.  Your Active Directory account name should be the same as your NetID but the  password can be different.

The following table describes various accounts that you may have while working for the Library and who is responsible for them. This way, when you have a problem with one of your accounts, you know who to call to get it straightend out.

Account Who's in charge What it does
UI NetId CITES Network dial-up from home; blue-stem authentication; many others.
Active Directory CITES Access to your desktop PC; Netfiles.
Express E-mail CITES University provided e-mail service.
Voyager Library Systems Office Access to the Voyager system.
III (Innovative and Millenium) Library Systems Office There is a different account, one each for the telnet front end, the MilAcq, and the Milser clients.
