SERVICES
- Appointed Bob Burger as first Associate University Librarian for Services
- Participated in national LibQual Survey
- Services Advisory Committee approved and appointed
- Review of privacy policy underway by Administrative Council subcommittee
- History & Philosophy Library began a major revision of the unit’s
website
- E-Reserves pilot project declared a success and plans underway to expand
service to other libraries
- Music Library provided Web-based listening assignments for ten School of
Music courses
- Music Library completed a shelf reading project encompassing its entire
collection of printed music
- Work to redesign the Library’s Gateway continues to build on the
previous usability study and other known issues
- Implemented DOCLINE
- Archives oversaw Reston Digital imaging project resulting in presentation
of 3000 pages on the Internet
- Archives revamped University Archives and ALA archives websites
- Reference and the Undergraduate Library set up real-time online reference
service pilot and collected data that indicates that users are finding,
using, and appreciating the services
- Welcome Desk service began
- Reference developed a database to help locate UIUC microforms, available
on Library Gateway
- Became fully participating members of the LC Collaborative Digital
Reference Service
- ILLiad ILL management software implemented; users will have access to
their ILL accounts allowing them access to request status, resubmit
requests, and keep a record of all previous requests
- Government Documents substantially revised sections of its web site to
improve access to major global tools and to increase coverage and content on
the Illinois State Government pages
- Latin American Services Unit changed their name to Latin American and Caribbean Library.
STAFF
- Held first Library-wide retreat
- Hired 25 faculty and academic professionals in past year
- First Faculty Excellence hire – Katie Clark, Biotechnology Librarian
- Held third and final in series of ARL professional development seminars
- Created LibStaff-L email list
- Tech Services held basic Windows training for all TSD staff
COLLECTIONS
- Library Allocations Steering Committee completed its work and submitted
report to Provost and University Librarian

Received William Maxwell’s last correspondence with John Updike from
Updike
- With financial assistance from the President’s Chester Fund, purchased
5 Proust letters at a London auction
- Received Ruth Davidow Collection (nurse in Spanish Civil War)
- Received Shana Alexander papers
- Received additional Milton Wolff Collection (served in Abraham Lincoln
Brigade in Spanish Civil War)
- Strengthened work of Library’s Jewish Studies Committee
- Architecture and Art Library acquired the most extensive collection of
reproductions of Western art on microfiche (more than 1.4 million images
of works by more than 50,000 artists, from the 12th century to
the present day)
- Classics Library acquired microform copies of a collection of
dissertations and Programmschriften at the University of Cincinnati
- Asian Library received donation of more than 150 titles of new Chinese
books from the National Central Library in Taiwan
- Asian Library selected and received more than 1000 volumes of Chinese
language materials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago
- Cooperated with UIC to fund electronic resources, including MDConsult,
AgeLine, 4 cell press journals, and ScienceDirect
- Spent funds from CCMP grants
- Vet Med and Biology weeded collections
- Acquired national archives of the Association of College Honor Societies
- Commerce acquired access to online Mergers & Acquisitions, funded
jointly with the College of Commerce and Business Administration
- Communications negotiated agreement with American Advertising Federation
to develop and host the digital version of the Advertising Hall of Fame
exhibit; will contain digital versions of video, audio, and print
documents
- Labor and Industrial Relations Library received a collection of 454
titles of labor newspapers donated by the Human Resources Development
Canada Library
- Illinois Historical Survey acquired papers of the Chicago College of
Midwifery of the 1890s
- Science Direct, the full text Elsevier product, was acquired on a
permanent basis
- Nature Online was acquired and made available, after some considerable
negotiation with the publisher
- Collection and service issues related to the new program in Medieval
Studies were reviewed and plans made to meet the needs of the faculty and
students
INTELLECTUAL ACCESS/TECHNICAL SERVICES
Task Force on Access appointed and began work
Lincoln Room began planning for an inventory of cataloged materials
Improved cooperative system that collects Electronic Journal metadata;
added much data and altered system to record usage data
WAGR Library Film and Video Database was enhanced with new search
features and expanded entries
Continuing successful implementation of III system
Began writing RFP for French book purchases
Continued toward successful implementation of OCLC PromptCat Service
Began CCMCC serials retrospective conversion grant (have reached
projected goal of 1000 serials titles halfway through project)
Completed serials notes fix project (total of 2,889 notes and 3,605
MFHDs have been cleaned up)
Began implementation of CatMe to replace Passport in Library cataloging
units
Designed and implemented updated version of OCLC cataloging macros
Archives completed processing of James Stukel personal papers.
Produced
EAD finding aids for Lorado Taft Papers, ALA Archives
Archives directed PDF finding aid project; integrated all supplementary
finding aids into University Archives and ALA archives to deliver the
content of all finding aids via the Internet
Communications Library received funding from the College of
Communications to develop a web index to the Woodward Advertising
Collection (more than 4 million print ads)
Communications Library added bibliographic and descriptive information
for about 200 videocassettes to the library’s web site
Illinois Historical Survey processed the Belting, Lichtenstern, Meharry,
and Perkins collections
Backlog reductions:
South and West Asian section of Asian Library - more than 1000 books, Vet Med (completed),
Biology (completed), Chemistry (completed), Commerce (completed)
PRESERVATION
Microform Services office reintegrated back into Library from Printing
Services
Evaluation of preservation and conservation environmental needs completed
by Mike Trinkley
Ricker Architecture and Art Library completed its initiative to microform
Nathan Clifford Ricker’s original architectural translations
Classics Library began preservation microfilming of the
Dittenberger-Vahlen dissertations and Programmschriften
Women & Gender Resources Library completed a multi-year project to
catalog and microfilm more than 1000 pre-1985 women’s studies publications
Biology began extensive preservation/cleanup project (cleaning bookstacks,
processing Oberholser reprint collection, weeding collection, etc.)
Prepared preservation recommendations for 3rd Armored Division
Association Archives
Government Documents identified and processed dozens of titles in need of
binding
City Planning and Landscape Architecture developed a web site listing the
contents of its important vertical files
Preservation supplies were reviewed for currency, usability and number;
items cleaned and stored in a more organized way
Book-keeper in-house deacidification system purchased
Minter encapsulation machine ordered (now being built)
The Microfilming and Reformatting Unit moved into the Library system,
reporting to Preservation
Recommendations from consultant Michael Trinkley regarding environmental
and storage issues in the Rare Book Room were undertaken
USER EDUCATION
- Moved about 300 Chem 110 students from print to electronic, resulting in
students learning to use a product they can adopt to other papers, projects,
and lab assignments
- Applied Life Studies presented a record number of BI sessions (19)
- Communications taught 15 additional BI sessions
ARCHIVES
Proposal submitted for archiving electronic records in UI Integrate project
Negotiated renewal of archival service contracts with Advertising Council,
Alpha Tau Omega, AALL, AALS, and Society for the Preservation of Greek
Housing (total of more than $85,000)
In conjunction with the Secretary of the University and UIC and UIS campus
archivists, developed an integrated records scheduling procedure for the
three campuses
TECHNOLOGY
ILCSO’s Board of Directors accepted SATF recommendation to negotiate
with Endeavor for new system
Created new position of Associate University Librarian for Library
Information Technology Policy and Planning; search underway
Migrated old Innovative serials systems to a new server, expanded it to
more users, and installed the Millenium system
Electronic reserves systems significantly enhanced to allow better
enforcement of copyright-related restrictions on access and to allow
searching the collection directly rather than only via DRA
Systems developed the following: database and web interface to allow order
requests to be entered electronically; developed a database and web
interface to assist with matching GA applicants to potential hiring units
Replaced primary web server by a pair of servers for faster response and
greater reliability
Installed 259 new computers throughout the Library
OUTREACH/DEVELOPMENT/PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Library Friends hosted Miles Harvey event in the RBSC Library with over
100 donors in attendance
- Library hosted Shana Alexander/Maya Angelou event at Foellinger Auditorium
with over 900 people in attendance
- FY2000 Annual Report was sent to all Library donors, librarians, and
development offices
- New Library College Accounts were created
- The Library was featured in Inside Illinois in a 2-page spread
during National Library Week
- Annual Funds reached $397,000
- Library Campaign Feasibility Study was begun
- Donald and Marilyn Ainsworth’s gift was announced at UI Foundation
Spring Gathering in April
- WILL documentary "The Song and the Slogan" was filmed in RBSC
stacks, using materials in Sandburg collection
- ACES Library assumed responsibility for corn and soybean resources in
AgNIC
- Launches oral history project for alumni of the 1920s and 1930; 44
interviews with tapes and
transcripts completed
- Oversaw the Student Life and Culture/Society for the Preservation of Greek
Housing project to compose chapter histories for all UI fraternities and
sororities
- Mortenson Center entered into two new partnerships: the Illinois State
Library and the Council on Library and Information Resources
- ABSEES added 6 new subscribing institutions
- IRIS added 10 new subscribing institutions
- Reference continued outreach program to undergraduate Learning Communities
FACILITIES
- ACES construction near completion
- Prepared ACES collections for move to new facility
- Rewiring of Undergraduate Library began
- Began work with architects on Oak Street facility
- Prepared draft program statement for possible new FAA Library building
- Main Library reconfiguration began
- History & Philosophy Library began shifting 10,000 volumes to compact
shelving in the Undergraduate Library in the first stage of a project to
relieve severe congestion
- The Lincoln Room established a workroom devoted to the collection
- WAGR Library expanded into Room 413, doubling the Library’s space
- Mortenson Center moved to remodeled space in the Undergraduate Library

- Conducted Audit Procedures meetings to familiarize unit heads with Campus
audit policies and procedures
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
- Mortenson Center welcomed librarians from the Network Library Training
Center Fellows Program, IFLA-OCLC Training Program, and participants of a
Russian Small-Towns Project that promoted working relationships between small
town government officials and library professionals
- International Strategy Task Force began its work
