Acquisitions implemented the Voyager Acquisitions module
Serial cataloging worked on TDnet implementation
Serial cataloging held two sessions for 407 cataloging class
Undergraduate Library Media Center and Reserve Unit physically and procedurally combined to become the Media & Reserve Center at the Undergraduate Library
Undergraduate Library Media & Reserve Center picked up electronic reserve processing for 16 departmental libraries (including Undergrad), which meant processing over 7,000 items for 402 courses in 73 departments during Fall 2003
Undergraduate Library media circulation statistics were up 76% from the previous fall semester.
In Preservation, binding has ramped up and is absorbing the processing for approximately 20% more binding than last year and it lending assistance to RBX for an enclosure project
Preservation received a grant to microfilm two significant serial titles related to railroading
IRRC is working on a project to scan and deliver to public libraries. IRRC worked with Grainger to use their scan and send software to send articles to requesting libraries and have thereby saved on the labor previously required to rescan copies made there
IRRC migrated the Intra campus document delivery service called UIUC Doc Express to the ILLiad platform in December which has meant a full integration of IRRC services on ILLiad and ultimately better service for users
IRRC identified 75,000 local data records, in summary the serial holdings, that were successfully loaded into OCLC in December
Reference worked with the Ethnography of the University project to develop and maintain a library-based website (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/rex/instruction/eotuproject/index.htm) to support this cross-disciplinary initiative
Reference expanded its virtual reference service by implementing new software that allows them to collaborate with other units in the library
Reference made significant progress towards its goal of facilitating physical access to the print reference collection by designating locations in the online catalog for materials not shelved along the wall (e.g., Index Tables, Encyclopedia Cases, etc)
Reference improved the appearance of the Reference Room by relieving overcrowding through transfer of dated or superceded reference materials to the Reference Office in 200N
City Planning &
Landscape Architecture created a Web site for the Evert Kincaid Collection,
well-known city planner of Illinois and alumnus—includes over 280 letters,
speeches, reports, articles, and photos
City Planning & Landscape Architecture created online and print guides: "General
Research Resources for City Planning and Landscape Architecture" (11pp),
"Resources in City Planning" (14pp), and "Resources in Landscape Architecture"
(14pp), which serve as invaluable tools for bibliographic instruction and
reference
City Planning & Landscape Architecture installed a Google search feature so that
users can query just the CPLA Web pages
Commerce, in partnership with the Department of Finance, offered a new workshop series called "Bloomberg Fridays”
Education and Social Science has the most heavily used Web site of all unit Web sites at the UIUC Library. Its Web pages were accessed over 2 million times in 2003
Education and Social Science added 256 linear feet (16 book cases) of shelving to decrease crowding in the ESSL book stacks
Education & Social Science developed and publicized a Web site on Locating Dissertations and Theses http://www.library.uiuc.edu/edx/dissertations.htm
Library & Information Science, with funding from GSLIS, hired and trained a temporary grad student employee to streamline e-reserves processing for spring semester

Asian contributed to the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies successful DOE Title VI grant proposal; it is now a National Resources Center for Undergraduate Asian Studies

Latin American & Caribbean continued its work assisting in the development of the Latina/o Studies Collection.
Latin American & Caribbean was one of twelve libraries to participate in the University of Texas at Austin’s Nettie Lee Benson Latin America Collection’s federally-funded project to microfilm 19th-Century Mexican Newspapers, searching, verifying, and sending titles to the University of Texas for filming
Slavic & East European hosted a national Slavic Library Workshop

Library Systems Office gave training workshops on custom Voyager SQL queries and on creating database-driven web pages using PHP
Library Systems Office implemented new procedures, documentation, and education of Library staff to improve data management practices. Primary goals were to reduce the risk of information loss with proper backup practices, and to make continual support and upgrades of workstations more efficient.
Technical Services Division hosted students in their LEEP course
Mortenson fall associates program, from September 9 to October 29, included 15 Mortenson Associates from Colombia, India, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa
Mortenson received a $48,900 Carnegie Corporation grant which supported participation by Kenyan public librarians in fall training program
Mortenson Center organized short term visits for librarians from Honduras, Croatia, and Armenia
Mortenson and GSLIS presented an American Libraries Seminar for International Visitors and Students on September 15, 29 and October 6.
Mortenson Distinguished lecture on September 22 featured Jesus Lau speaking on information literacy. Dr. Lau also met with librarians and others on campus to speak informally about the topic.
Mortenson workshop on leadership was presented with Costa Rican partner in December in San Jose funded by CLIR
Mortenson Associates were hosted by libraries around the state as part of a successful program titled, “The Illinois Host Program” with the Illinois State Library
Mortenson is participating in collaborative work on international issues with University of Toronto and a visit is planned here in the fall
Mortenson received two donations: $10,000 to Choldin fund from the Mortensons and $10,000 donation to Mortenson Center from Carol Erickson
Mortenson submitted proposals to extend the Mellon grant with South Africa ($49,980) and to Carnegie to work with universities in Africa ($42,600)
