Services
· Afro-Americana Library created three new subject bibliographies on its webpage and added 41 links to external subject bibliographies
· Afro-Americana Library updated and improved access to “African Americans in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census” at the Pan-African CD-ROM workstation
· Asian Library updated its homepage and developed a new web site for the South Asian collection
· Asian Library compiled a bibliography of dissertations on South Asia that were accepted at UIUC
· Communications Library processed and cataloged 12 years of the Stanley Cohen Collection
· Communications Library rearranged, relabeled, and shifted current periodicals collection and inventoried and relabeled folders in D’Arcy Advertising Collection
· Education and Social Science Library sent 1,000 children’s book titles to TechPro for outsourced cataloging
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library improved signage by ordering a black laminate name sign for the outside of the office and had a sign made for the main door to provide phone number, web site, and hours
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library re-indexed internet resource links on its webpage to enable browsing by country as well as subject
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library indexed 20 issues of Latin American and Caribbean journals for the Hispanic American Periodicals Index and the Latin American Periodicals Tables of Contents
· Physics Astronomy Library received another year extension on the CRDF/MRDA grant for the establishment of an online portal for access to Moldovan Academy of Sciences publications
· Undergrad Library picked up e-reserve processing for Education, Social Science Library
· Undergrad Library began circulating audiobook collection
· City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library has a newly designed wooden gold-lettered sign above its entrance
· City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library has put up a website for Evert Kincaid, a well-known city planner of Illinois (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/cpx/vertfile/kincaid)
· City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library reconfigured shelf space to accommodate further expansion for bound journals
· Education and Social Science Library developed and publicized websites on Educational Standards (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/edx/edstandards.htm); Information Sources on the Nation and International Conflict (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/edx/iraq.htm); Guide to Sources on Native Americans (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/edx/NativAmGui.htm)
· Geology Library has a new graphic on its homepage and has completed work on PSED web pages
· Geology Library presented library instruction to four different geology classes and four web pages were created in support of geology class projects; a fifth web page was updated for another class; a sixth was begun in support of the coming January 2004 field trip course to Curasao, Netherlands Antilles
· Funk ACES Library redid and enhanced its Illinois AgNIC site and developed a Food, Science and Nutrition web-based guide
· Biology and Biotechnology Libraries presented a continuing education course at the Special Libraries Association meeting in June
· Biotechnology Librarian continued to expand the links to the full text of articles from key journal indexes and created a web file detailing methods for finding full titles of journals from the abbreviated title, and vice versa
· Biotechnology Librarian created a FAQ file for biological and agricultural researchers
· Biotechnology Librarian added over 300 titles to the multi-disciplinary registry of journals
· Biotechnology Librarian purchased Elsevier electronic journal back issues in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics
· Information Resource Retrieval Center successfully tested and implemented the OpenUrl link with FS WorldCat
· Information Resource Retrieval Center submitted 75,000+ serial holding records to update the OCLC serial holding records for UIU for the matching bibliographic records
· Information Resource Retrieval Center updated their web pages
· Acquisitions conducted four Voyager Acquisitions training sessions for fund managers and hosted several vendor demonstrations
· Cataloging converted 2100 URLs in the OPAC to point directly into the E-registry and created 4,000 summary statements for serials
· Cataloging brought bib records for over 200 databases and electronic resources into Voyager
· Cataloging completed cataloging of all 2002 UIUC theses, created/designed an Access database of all uncataloged UIUC theses titles, completed OCLC TechPro project eliminating all EBO backlogs, and eliminated LABO backlog
· Cataloging gave three training session involving cataloging with National Standards for Serials Holdings and sponsored two practicum for GSLIS students to help/train them in aspects of cataloging electronic resources
· Cataloging participated in NACO training
· Conservation/Preservation launched a new website
· Cataloging developed policy for loading microform analytic catalog records into Voyager and conducted Voyager cataloging training for non-catalogers
· University High Library web page (http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/library) won in the small high schools category of the netConnect/Web Feet Best of the Web Award.

Collections
· Afro-Americana Library completed inventory of permanent reserve collection and is working on withdrawals and record cleanup
· Afro-American Library continued to identify pamphlets from main stacks for relocation to the Rare Books & Special Collection’s Black Radical Pamphlet Collection
· Afro-Americana Library added new databases: INASP Book Chain in Anglophone Africa, and OSSREA (Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa) on CD
· Asian Library renewed the only Asian language online database “MagazinePlus,” a Japanese language periodical index database
· Asian Library subscribed to “Index Islamicus,” an online index that list scholarly articles published in European languages about the Middle East and Islam
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library purchased six videos with funds from the Non-Print Committee
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library purchased Sur on CD-ROM, a searchable CD-ROM version of one of the most influential 20th-century Latin American literary magazines
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library obtained a complete collection of the Latin American magazine Pulso free of charge while traveling in South America for the International Book Fair
· City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library transferred 1,582 slides on landscape architecture from UGL
· Commerce Library obtained a campus-wide license for IFS Online
· Commerce Library assisted in the initial license agreement negotiations for the Bloomberg database in its reference area
· Communications Library weeded the reference collection and transferred older and unused items to CMX and STX
· Communications Library acquired additional shelving for the video collection and shifted the collection
· Communications Library acquired Housecalls Consumer Research Video Collection and received funding from the Library Friends Preservation Competition for reformatting of Housecalls Consumer Research Video Collection from ¾ inch to VHS
· Library & Information Science Library shifted the entire book collection after they added new shelving
· Library & Information Science Library ordered eighty+ e-books from netLibrary in the general fields of Internet studies and LIS
· Geology Library added more book cases and shifted materials
· Geology Library accomplished electronic access to several American Geophysical Union journals
· Geology Library completed the project to determine all UIUC geology theses, dissertations, and senior honors papers not in GeoRef, copy title pages and abstracts, and compiled data for GeoRef
· Funk ACES Library processed 25,000 volumes for Oak Street
· Biology Library shifted several sections of book stacks as well as the Reference Collection
· Acquisitions finalized the Ebsco contract and wrote and evaluated the RFP for monographs/approvals and standing orders
· Acquisitions planned the Voyager Acquisitions implementation and oversaw the project to get serial order records in shape for the implementation
· Acquisitions worked with Collections to clean-up and add new records to the E-registry
· Cataloging updated 2000 subject headings in Voyager to reflect changes in LC subject heading terminology
Preservation
· Communications Library received funding from NEH Challenge Grant to digitize and preserve the Benevolent Dictators Advertising Collection
· Conservation/Preservation hired a brittle books coordinator and launched a brittle books replacement and reformatting program
· Conservation/Preservation finished the mass deacidification of the Meine Collection of American Wit and Humor
· Conservation/Preservation completed library binding documentation and tattle taping instructions
Equipment/Infrastructure
· Undergrad Library received $11,500 from the Atius-Sachem Mom’s Day Sing which will be used to purchase a new Reference/Information desk
Development/Public Affairs/Outreach
· Asian Library contributed to the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies successful proposal to the Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant
· Education and Social Science Library: Lynne Rudasill participated in successful European Union Center grant that will provide funds for purchase of library materials and she was appointed to the EU Center board
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library helped host visiting Mortenson Center librarians from Ecuador
· Latin American & Caribbean Studies Library began accepting, reviewing, and editing submissions for v. 10 of Bolivian Studies Journal, the scholarly journal they began editing and publishing in 2001
· City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library has a new column “Academic Focus, The CPLA Library” that appears in the Department of Landscape Architecture Newsletter, 2002-2003
· Library & Information Science Library inaugurated a column in the GSLIS Alumni Newsletter to spotlight services and needs in the LIS Library
· Mortenson Center established the Marianna Tax Choldin Fund
· Mortenson Center brought librarians for training through the South African Library Leadership Program, the Kazakhstan Improvement of Library Management from Meridian, and the Carnegie Corporation
· Mortenson Center brought Russian librarians, information technologists and university administrators through a grant received by the American Council for International Education and the World Bank
· Mortenson Center continued partnership with the Illinois State Library and new partnership with the Chicago Public Library sent international librarians to public libraries in Ashland, Springfield, Williamsville, Chatham, Rochester, and to Western Illinois University and 6 branches of the Chicago Public Library
· Mortenson Center presented two poster session at American Library Association annual conference and a program was presented at the Illinois State Library on the Front Lines Conference
· Mortenson Center initiated periodic newsletter to keep library and others informed about them
· Funk ACES Library and Biotechnology Librarian co-hosted the USAIN conference in April
· Biotechnology Librarian was invited to several lab group meetings to inform students, post-docs, and professors about best practices in information-seeking behavior
· Information Resource Retrieval Center hosted a successful ILL Forum for Library Faculty and Staff in Spring 2003
· Library Development hosted a successful conference of DORAL
· Library Development: the Newspaper Opening Event was attended by over 100 Library donors and the IBM event was attended by over 60 Library donors
· Library Development: first year participation in the Printer’s Row Book Fair was a huge success
· Library Development held the first meeting of the Library Campaign Steering Committee in Chicago
· Library Development reported approximately $620,000 in matching funds for the Mellon grant
· Library Development secured a six-figure gift to fund the 10 millionth volume
Other
· Labor and Industrial Relations Library: Margaret Chaplin was awarded the Distinguished Member Award by the Business & Finance Division of the Special Library Association at the June 10, 2003 SLA meeting in New York
· Mortenson Center finalized the Library International Strategies document and it was approved
· Funk ACES Library: Pat Allen was elected chair of the Food, Agriculture and Nutrition Division of the Special Libraries Association
· Funk ACES Library: Joe Zumalt was elected to serve on the AgNIC Executive Board as Member-at-Large and was appointed Membership Chair of the Food, Agriculture and Nutrition Division of the Special Libraries Association
· Funk ACES Library was awarded a NEH-USAIN Preservation of the Agricultural Communications grant
· Information Resource Retrieval Center: Lynn Wiley chaired the ALA group that successfully hosted an ILL Conference at ALA Toronto
· Library Development: FY01 Annual Report won the LAMA best of show award and the FY02 Annual Report received rave reviews from several Library donors
· Cataloging: Fang Gao received student grant to travel to NASIG and was named by Jean Hirons and CONSER to receive training to become trainer for sessions in Basic Serials Cataloging
