    In English. This site provides links to several country profiles for the Slovak Republic such as the State Department's Country Commercial Guide and Ernst and Young's Doing Business in ... site. There are also links to several Slovak governmental agencies that deal with economics and business. Exportall is a Dutch site relating to international business and export sponsored by the Dutch Export Consultancy and Worldwide Info Search.

  • National Bank of Slovakia

    In English or Slovak. This site provides information about the National Bank of Slovakia such as the laws that govern it, its organization, etc. Of particular interest are the numerous financial statistics that are available including state budget, inflation, and unemployment data. Some reports are available for download in pdf format such as the the Annual Report of the Bank and the full version of Monetary Survey, the Bank's monthly bulletin.

    Culture

    The website of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library contains many links related to Slovak culture. See the description of their site under Search Engines and Directories.

    Mostly in Slovak, some in English. In addition to a brief history of the Academy of Sciences and other general information, the homepage of the Academy contains contact information and links to the sites of its member institutes and its publishing house VEDA. There is also a link to the on-line catalog of the Central Library of the Academy of Sciences.

    In Slovak. This site is an archive of freeware and shareware available for download. The search component requires Slovak fonts.

    Genealogy

    Many of the big genealogy sites such as Cyndi's List have sections pertaining to Eastern Europe and/or specific countries or ethnic groups. Try some of them for additional sites on Czech and Slovak genealogy. Also, don't overlook the FEEFHS, Federation of East European Family History Societies, which is described in the General Resources section of our site.

A certified and accredited genealogist who is the editor of Rocenka, the yearbook of the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, lists and annotates the reference books that he uses to get background information to do his searches in the Czech and Slovak Republics.     In English. This site provides a variety of information about the Society, its mission and publications. It gives detailed instructions on how to request information from archives in the Slovak and Czech Republics, including sample requests that can be printed, filled out and mailed to the appropriate agency.

  • Government of the Slovak Republic

    In Slovak. Some in English. This is the main site of the government of the Slovak Republic. Here can be found general information on the composition of the government and many of the documents it produces such as the constitution, resolutions, programs and communiques of the various sessions, etc. Through Govnet, the computer network that unites the Slovak government information sources, there is access to other government agencies. The search component on this site requires Slovak fonts.

  • Parliament

    In Slovak or English. This is the main site of the Narodna rada or Parliament of the Slovak Republic. Here can be found general information on the duties and composition of the Parliament, including brief biographical data and photos of all of the deputies. Information about the various committees is also provided here. The Slovak version of the site has more information than the English version, such as documents of the government available in .pdf format. The text of the constitution in Slovak is one of those documents. The search component requires Slovak fonts.

  • Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic

    In English or Slovak. This site contains a wide range of information from population and consumer statistics to election results. The ELIS or Electronic Information Service allows connection via modem to a large number of statistical publications which can be downloaded. There are links to the IMF Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board and to other countries' statistical offices.

    In English. This page is part of the larger site called Elections around the World. It contains results from the latest elections that occurred in the Slovak Republic. It also has links to the home pages of various Slovak political parties.

  • Encyclopedia of Contemporary Writers in Slovakia

    In Slovak. This on-line encyclopedia is produced by the Format Publishing House. The entries consist of short biographies of Slovak writers with a list of works published and a photograph. There is an alphabetical index of the writers and a search component which does not work with Slovak fonts.

    Libraries and Archives

    Often information about archives can be found on genealogical sites since genealogists make extensive use of archival documents in their research. See the Genealogy section for the Slovak Republic.

  • Slovenska narodna kniznice

    In Slovak. This is the site of the Slovak National Library. Available here are its on-line catalogs of monographs and of articles as well as the Slovak Union Catalog. The catalogs have an optional English interface, but they do require Slovak fonts. The site includes links to other on-line library catalogs of the Slovak and Czech Republics and a list of depository libraries in the Slovak Republic.

    In English. This site, intended for the genealogical researcher, provides instructions on how to request information from archives in the Slovak and Czech Republics. There is also a listing of archives in both countries with addresses and hours of operation. Sample genealogical requests are available.

  • Mapy

    In Slovak. This site, part of the gateway Zoznam, has maps of the Slovak Republic and several of its major cities. The site is searchable by town and street name. The maps can be viewed at four levels of detail. Although at the deepest zoom level the maps show important buildings and institutions, they are not accessible via searching. The search component does not require Slovak fonts.

    Media

    Most of the Slovak search engines and directories will also provide lists of journals, newspapers, radio stations, etc. on-line.

    This is a list of links to various Slovak media sites. The type of media is indicated by an abbreviation next to the title. Regional media are listed separately from national ones.

  • Slovakia Daily Surveyor

    In English. This site aims to provide up-to-date information about the Slovak Republic from basic data to the latest news. It offers headlines from a variety of media such as the Slovak News Agency. Here the national anthem can be heard via a .mid file. There are also links to other Slovak sites organized by subject. For someone who knows little about Slovakia, this site would be a good starting point. The search component is unreliable.

    Mostly in Slovak. Entering the site as an anonymous user enables access to selected news stories in the areas of international or domestic news, sports, economics, etc. The latest 2 weeks of news are available by category or by keyword searching. The search component does not require Slovak fonts. Full news access is a paid service.

    This is a list of links for Slovak journals, newspapers, radio and television stations and other media sites generated by the gateway Superzoznam.

    In Slovak. Radia.sk is an excellent site for matters relating to radio in the Slovak Republic. It contains a list of Slovak radio stations arranged by town as well as contact, licensing, and news agency information for many stations. Listener statistics, news on the radio industry and links to radio web sites are just some of the features to be found here. A free downloadable Real Player enables listening to live broadcasts from various stations in .ram format through this site.

    In Slovak. This subject directory for television is easy to use and has many links to television broadcasting companies arranged by country. There are also links for sites that contain program schedules for many of the channels in the Slovak and Czech Republics. The cable sites are only for companies operating in the Slovak and Czech Republics.

    In Slovak. The English version is under construction. This directory by Slovenske telekomunikacie allows searching for individuals, businesses and organizations in all of the Slovak Republic. There is also a key word component that gives subject access to the entries. No Slovak fonts are necessary.

    In English or Slovak. The Slovak Yellow Pages by Mediatel. Searching can be done by keyword, by company, or by street and can be limited to various major cities. Subjects are available in an alpahabetical listing in both English and Slovak. Slovak fonts are not necessary for searching.

    In Slovak. On-line Old and New Testaments with on-line concordances. Versions of the New Testament and concordances available here are the Slovak Rohacek, the Slovak Catholic New Version, the Czech Ecumenical, the English King James, the German Elberfelder, and the Greek. The concordances have a search component that does not use Slovak fonts.

    In Slovak. This is a list of search engines and gateways in Slovakia generated by the gateway Superzoznam.

  • Katalog slovenskeho internetu
    URL:  http://www.katalog.sk/
    In Slovak. This gateway began in 1997 and appears to be smaller than Zoznam, but it has a useful "special search" feature that allows searching of Katalog, Zoznam and surf.sk at the same time. The results indicate from which database the links were taken and how many duplicate links appeared. The main body of Katalog is a subject directory somewhat like Yahoo, but not as in-depth. The links often appear with a brief description of their content. The search component does not work with Slovak fonts.

    This list of Czech and Slovak related internet links was compiled by the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Although the links are not annotated, they are divided by broad subject categories such as Cultural and Fraternal Organizations, Genealogy, Museums, etc. Exploring the other sections of the Museum's site is also worthwhile. In English.
