About the Library Images Ask A Librarian

All of the sites on this page are general in the sense that they do not limit themselves to the resources of a particular country. We have attempted to include those sources that have a regional orientation. That is, we have tried to find sites that all search by country/language/region.

Business

  • International Business Resources on the World Wide Web
    URL: http://ciber.bus.msu.edu/busres.htm

The search function on this site will allow you to search by country or keyword. There are also country lists, newspaper lists, links to journals and a variety of other sources listed at this site maintained by Michigan State University's Center for International Business Education and Research. The site has been in existence since 1995 and is updated frequently. The links are annotated.

  •
  • OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web
    URL: http://www.library.auckland.ac.nz/subjects/stats/offstats/

"OFFSTATS lists web sites offering free and easily accessible social, economic and general data from official or similar "quotable" sources, especially those that provide both current data and time series. The site is organized by country, but also has a list of topics and a list of resources by Subject. While there are annotations, they are minimal and do not indicate the language of the data you will find at the link. The site has been maintained since 1998 by Rainer Wolcke of the Business and Economics Library at the University of Auckland Library.

    Culture

  • World Wide Art Resources
    URL: http://www.wwar.com

This site lists links to visual and performing arts and. The site includes a search engine. Linking to the individual pages on specific categories of art, such as "Art around the World" or "Art History", will supply a list of geographically arranged links. Clicking on the geographical links gives choices of cities or regions within a country. After selecting a particular area or city, you will get links to galleries, specific artists, etc. The site is not comprehensive but does provide a good starting point. It was created in 1995 and is maintained by a company called World Wide Art Resources. Every site submitted is reviewed and their compilers claim to only include qualitative sites.

  • Adam
    URL: http://adam.ac.uk

Adam, the Art, Design, Architecture and Media Information Gateway, is "a searchable catalogue of 2546 Internet resources that have been carefully selected and catalogued by professional librarians for the benefit of the UK Higher Education community" (Adam, Home Page). The site has a search engine that yields extensive descriptions of each link. It is not in any way comprehensive, but reflects a great deal of selectivity on the part of the librarians.

  • Ethnologue
    URL: http://www.sil.org/ethnologue/

This is a good introductory site for information on most any ethnic group in the world.  It is the online version of a publication of the same title.  The source was originally designed for linguists and was produced at Indiana University.  A search on a term will bring up a brief ethnographic sketch on the peoples in a region.

    Educational Institutions

  • Global Directory of Universities.
    URL: http://www.galilei.com.ar/europa/ieuropa.html

At first glance this is simply a list of links to some 3,000 universities around the world, organized by country. If you go to the search page, you can search by country or by type of institution. The listing includes universities, colleges, polytechnics, technical colleges and other academic institutions. There is also on this page a list of White and Yellow Pages available online, as well as newpapers of the world. This site is updated frequently and has been in existence since 1996. It is not, strictly speaking, a commercial site as the creators do not allow any advertising on the site.

  • General Education Online Page
    URL: http://wsdo.sao.uwf.edu/~geo

This is a list maintained by the University of West Florida. It is organized by country and includes active links to a large number of college and university sites. "GEO provides a free listing of approximately 6400 educational sites located around the world. The purpose of this listing is to provide students with links to web sites of educational facilities worldwide." (General Education Online Page, Disclaimer Page). This site is updated frequently.

  • College Night.com
    URL: http://www.collegenight.com/

This site is rich in information of all kinds on colleges and universities in the United States. When we checked the site, 06/06/00, the link to International colleges was not functioning. There is no search engine built into this system, but the organization makes the site easy to navigate. While this site was devised for those seeking information on college entry, it does contain data of a more general nature on college education and can be useful for those seeking international programs run from U.S. institutions.

    Fonts and Keyboards

  • ISO 8859-2 (Latin 2) Resources
    URL: http://nl.ijs.si/gnusl/cee/iso8859-2.html

This site has been the clearing house for information on Central European fonts and keyboards since 1996. The site includes general information on fonts as well as information for fonts for specific languages. The site is updated frequently. However, the compilers of this site do have a disclaimer that they cannot be responsible for the veracity of the information on any of the links they list.

  • Keyboard maps
    URL: http://www.hermessoft.com/newproject/lang.html

One of the most annoying problems about some of the fonts that are loaded on computers is that is difficult to predict where any letter will appear on the keyboard. This site is a commercial vendor selling a set of fonts and keyboards. However, they have keyboard "maps" for all East European languages that can be printed, making it much easier to find your way around the keyboard. We are not advocating the use of the product being sold here. Indeed, none of us have used it. However, if you need a printout of a keyboard, this is one of the most convenient places to get it.

  • Cyrillic for MS Windows Netscape
    URL: http://www.siber.com/sib/russify/

This is one of two sites that we regularly recommend to people looking for information on Russifying their computers. The site has information for all platforms (Mac, Windows, UNIX, etc.). The explanations are clear for the most part. The only difficulty we have run into has to do with Windows98. If you are working on a computer that has this operating system, you will need to look at Paul Gorodynsky's site (see Russian section) for help with your keyboards.

  • Fonts in Cyberspace
    URL: http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/

This is a guide to finding fonts on the internet. it is produced by SIL international and has links to 408 sources for 126 languages.

This site is maintained by the Federation of East European Family History Societies located in Salt Lake City. The main page includes links to reviews of the best genealogy search engines, an ethnic/religious/national index and a web portal index. The latter is an extremely effective keyword search of the site. A search on the term Bessarabia brought some 73 matches of links to everything from an article on "Common topographical terms used in standard Imperial Russian Gazetteers of Bessarabia" by Thomas Edlund, to links to the site's excellent "Map room". For anyone doing research on genealogy of the region this site is essential.

  • Foreign government Resources on the Web
    URL: http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/foreign.html

This site is maintained by the University of Michigan and contains a variety of informational sources on foreign governments. Most countries have a link to the main government page. But the coverage under individual countries is uneven. For example, under Bulgaria, only the National Statistical Institute is linked. Croatia has links to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Central Government, the Croatian Institute for Culture and Information, the National Bank, Parliament and the President. It is difficult to know what causes the inconsistency in coverage. The site also has extensive links to foreign news resources, links to embassy pages and some statistical resources.

  • Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names

However, as a source for general information and for leads to other sources it is a well documented site.

  • World Atlas 2000
    URL: http://gheos.com/atlas/index.php

An excellent source for current maps of the world. There are a large number of special features on this site, such as statistical data, anthems, flags, and brief political data. There are political, physical and topographic maps. There is also data on world climate and environmental regions. There are two major problems immediately apparent with this site. The first is that is unclear what is the source of information used for statistics or for the maps. It is also unclear exactly who is responsible for the site.

    Publishing

  • The Literary Market Place
    URL: http://www.literarymarketplace.com/

This site provides access to an international list of publishers compiled by R.R. Bowker the publishers of what has been traditionally the main printed source for information on international publishers. The only difficulty with the site is that it requires that the user go through a free registration to view the brief publisher information. A subscription is required for complete information. There are also free resources that will allow the user to select a list of publishers for reference books. This feature does not require registration. The site is not exhaustive, but is a useful starting point. Nevertheless, it does provide a convenient list of publishers from around the world with their addresses.

  • Publishers' Catalogues Home Page
    URL: http://www.lights.com/publisher

This is one of the most heavily linked pages for publishers addresses. While in no way comprehensive, it is one more starting point. It is searchable by city or by country or name of publisher. The search by city does have one noticeable quirk. There has been no standardization in the city names used. Thus a search using "Prague" brings up only one match, while a search using "Praha" will result in several. The subject search is more difficult to use than that available in the Literary Market Place. This is a commercial site that has been set up to accommodate those interested in purchasing books.

    Religion

  • Academic Info Religion Gateway
    URL: http://www.academicinfo.net/religindex.html

He divides his sources from general to specific, directing the user where to continue with their research.

  • Virtual Religion Index
    URL: http://religion.rutgers.edu/vri/index.html

This site is maintained by the Rutgers University. It is a little difficult to navigate. However, there is a wealth of material here for anyone looking for religious information on the web. The subject areas covered include Academic Sites: Ancient Near East, Anthropology and Sociology, Art and Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Philosophy and many others. The orientation seems to be to traditional religions and the coverage of foreign language sources is limited.

    Search Engines and Directories

This section will list guides to a variety of different search mechanisms, engines, directories, portals, gateways. We have tried to select only those directories that have an international component.

  • Beaucoup!
    URL: www.beaucoup.com

This site was formerly known as Beaucoup Search Engines. It has long been a central site for a list of various search mechanisms. Its coverage is somewhat uneven in the category of International Engines. Thus 11 sites are listed for Czechoslovakia and only one for Russia. This seems to clearly be a limitation by language. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a subject search mechanism, this is a good starting point.

  • Search Engine Colossus
    URL: http://www.searchenginecolossus.com/

This is possibly the best one-stop site for getting an overview of foreign search engines. You simply click on the country name to view a list of links to search engines. The information on the sites is color-coded to reflect the type of search engine. Searchable directories which gather and list information via human effort have a neon typeface. Search engines that gather information via a "spider-robot" have a white typeface. Search engines with unique or unusual features have a brown typeface. The page is maintained and updated on a regular basis.

  • Eric Herron's Guide to Post Communist States on the Web
    URL: www.ku.edu/~herron/

This is one of the best area subject directories currently available, well organized, with a huge number of annotated links. The site is hosted by the University of Kansas Center for Russian and East European Studies. The links are divided into general, regional and country specific resources and are further divided by subject within each geographic region. Resources included in the guide focus on the areas of government, politics, news and media and search engines, but include other information as well. Links are to English and vernacular language sites.

    Women's Issues

  • Network of East-West Women
    URL: http://www.neww.org/

This is an excellent site for identifying links to pages on issues of interest to women in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. Along with the numerous general links with international information on the status of women, there are country pages with specific resources for each region. There is information on jobs, conferences, international laws and a variety of other topics. There are menus with individual country names as well as regional menus, allowing one to select pages on the Baltic, Balkans, Central Asia, etc. The site is in English, however, the linked sites are usually in the vernacular language.
