Finding books on a particular subject

  1. Go to the online library catalog.
  2. You may want to start with a quick search, putting your subject term(s) in the "Search for:" box, choosing Browse Subject in the "Search by:" box, and then clicking the Search button. Quick searching for subject headings in the catalog This will not take you directly to particular books, but will allow you to look through the list of subject headings used in our catalog. If one or more of the subject headings you find looks good, click on it to find out more about the item(s) that use that subject heading.
  3. If a quick search does not turn up anything you like, try a guided keyword search, putting your subject term(s) in one or more of the "Search for:" boxes and choosing Subject Words in the "Search by:" pull-down menu: Guided keyword search for subject words If you use more than one of the "Search for:" boxes, you need to choose the right word to connect them (AND, OR, or NOT). The default is AND, meaning that records will need to have both search terms to appear in your results.

Subject searching can be very complicated because of the way subjects are entered into the catalog. If you aren't finding any books by searching with a particular subject word or words, that doesn't mean we don't have any books on your subject! Please Ask A Librarian for help!
