Return to Czech/Slovak Subject Guides Often
an important step in obtaining articles important to your research is verifying
the bibliographic information for the newspaper or journal titles in which these
articles appear. An example of this is a common journal title such as Slovo.
If you take an article citation to an Interlibrary Loan office for a title called
Slovo without any more information, you may have your request delayed or
returned to you unfilled because of confusion as to which Slovo is the
correct one. There are numerous Slavic language titles called Slovo. By
providing even one more piece of information to the Interlibrary Loan staff, such
as the place of publication, you greatly increase your chances of getting the
desired article in a timely fashion. Or,
perhaps you need to know what titles a certain corporate body produced or who
was the editor of a particular journal at a particular time. Maybe you would like
to know which Czech or Slovak periodical publications were active on an annual
basis or in a certain region. This task can be quite daunting and no one source
will give you all the information, but using the sources listed in this section
is a good place to start for the answers to it and to the other questions mentioned
above. It is important
to keep in mind that all the works listed below that relied on the results of
depository laws as their basis for compilation have a caveat in their prefaces
that either the laws were not fully functional at that time or that publishers
were unfamiliar with the laws or ignored them. This means that none of the sources
are truly comprehensive. Bibliographic coverage of periodicals is spotty
for Czech, thus for information on periodicals you must take advantage of non-traditional
sources such as encyclopedias. Many Czech encylopedias have entries for periodical
titles and organizations. For example, under the entry for Casopis katolickeho
duchoventsva in the Masarykuv slovnik naucny can be found the names
of the various editors of the title, when and by whom it was founded, information
about the index to the title, and even the main focus of the journal. See the
page entitled Czech/Slovak Encyclopedias
for descriptions of major Czech and Slovak encylopedias including the Masarykuv.
The Slovak situation is more complete due to a series of retrospective bibliographies,
which are described below. Please also keep in mind that many of the sources listed
below will be in Czech, but will also provide coverage of Slovak titles. In the
annotations we will highlight in pink the languages or regions each resource covers.
Besides the bibliographies
listed below, there are many online sources that can provide bibliographic information
about Czech and Slovak periodicals such as WorldCat and RLIN, two large bibliographic
utilities, or online library catalogs from various major libraries including those
of the Czech National Library
and the Slovak National
Library. But other western sources can be extremely helpful such as Ulrich's
international periodicals directory which will give bibliographic and
publisher's information as well as telling you where the contents of a periodical
title is indexed. For online journals and newspapers
try using a media portal site that arranges the titles by country such as Kidon
Media-link or the newspaper section of The
Internet Public Library. Internet subject directories and search engines will
generate lists of newspapers, journals, and e-zines. For example, for Czech you
could search Seznam under the heading "Zpravodajstvi"
and for Slovak Zoznam under the heading "Spravodajstvo
a media." Included at
the end of this section are indexes for articles in newspaper
and periodical sources. Bibliographies

lists bibliographies of periodicals and newspapers that
were published in the territory of the Czech Lands, Subcarpathian Rus', or Slovakia.
The bibliographies may be published as monographs or journal articles. The citations
are arranged by region and also by publication dates. There are also sections
for regional bibliographies, bibliographies of periodicals based on subject areas,
and Czech and Slovak periodicals published abroad. Many of the entries are annotated.
There is an index of names and a chronological index. See the entries below which

sesit # 6 [bound together with Ceske knihy] Covering
the years 1650-1847, this bibliography presents
citations for newspapers, journals, and calendars that
were published in Bohemia and Moravia regardless of language. The entries
are arranged alphabetically by title. Entries are brief giving full publication
information, but at the end of each citation are abbreviations that represent
libraries in the Czech Republic that have the title and show their holdings. There
is a list of sources used to compile the bibliography, a chronological index,
an index by place of publication, and indexes for names and subjects. See the
image below for a calendar published in Cheb and Karlovy Vary.
Another
source that covers periodicals from this early time period (to 1846) is Jungmann's
famous bibliography entitled Historie

which are described on the Czech/Slovak
National Bibliography page.

Frantisek. Praha: Nakladem vydavatelstva Ducha novin, 1930. UIUC Call
Number: Czech/Slovak Reference 077 R75c
This bibliography
covers newspapers and periodicals published in Bohemia
regardless of language that were active at some point between 1848-1862.
Entries provide title, dates of publication, frequency, publisher, circulation
and subscription numbers, and abbreviations of libraries in the Czech Republic
that hold the titles. The entries are arranged by place of publication, with the
first and largest section being Prague. The bibliography opens with a bibliographic
essay on periodicals in Bohemia during 1848 and a bibliography of works about
Czech journalism and periodicals. At the end of the book are fold-out charts and
tables illustrating various topics such as listing journals by subject area. There
is an index of publishers. See the entry on the right for Pokrok hospodarsky.

Call Number: Czech/Slovak Reference 016.05786 R75b
This bibliography, a continuation of the title above, covers newspapers
and periodicals published in Bohemia and Moravia regardless of language that were
active at some point between 1863 and 1895. The entries contain the following
information for each title: publication place, publisher, editor, frequency, beginning
and ending dates, and title changes if any. Unfortunately, the titles are not
annotated. For some titles the size of the print run is
available and is indicated by the abbreviation nkl. Other interesting features
are an introductory article on the development of journalism in the Czech Lands,
a short bibliography on journalism in the Czech Lands, and a table that illustrates
the development of periodicals by subject and language (Czech vs. German) for
the time period covered by the bibliography. Abbreviations in some of the entries
indicate which library in Prague holds the title. Entries are arranged alphabetically
by title. There are indexes for personal names and subjects. See the entry above
left for the the title Nove proudy.

Reference 016.05786 N84s This bibliography covers Czech
and Slovak newspapers and periodicals that were active in 1908-09. The
compiler used publishers' catalogs and title lists from the collections of several
societies to gather the data. The entries contain the following information for
each title: publication place, publisher, editor, frequency, and the issues that
were published in 1908-09. There are, however, no annotations for the titles and
no information on the size of circulation. An interesting feature of this bibliography
is the table of statistics based on its contents that breaks down the number of
titles by country and by subject. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the
first significant word in the title. Unfortunately, the compiler's idea of significant
is not necessarily what the American librarian would consider significant, e.g.
Ceskoslovensky drogista is under D. There are indexes for publication place
and subject. See the entry below for Cesky Gardista.

If you are looking for journals
or newspapers published by one of the Ministries or other organizations during
the German occupation of Bohemia and Moravia from 1939-1945, this bibliography
will be helpful. It contains titles on a variety of subjects,
not just legal matters, for the organizations themselves had different areas of
responsibility or interest. For example, there are publications from the Office
of hydrology and hydrotechnology as well as ones from Musejni spolek in Jicin.
In total there are 2218 periodicals described in this bibliography. Entires are
arranged alphabetically by title and provide the following information: full title,
place and dates of publication, publisher, printer, frequency, size, and union
listing to show which libraries or archives in the Czech Republic hold the titles.
The volume opens with a long introductory article on periodical publishing under
Nazi occupation and it ends with some statistics as well as with indexes for subject,
place of publication, periodicals published by German or other foreign institutions,
and a list of German and Czech variants for geographic locations encountered in
this bibliography. Unfortunately, there is no index of publishers or organizations.

There is also a union listing component which shows which libraries in the Czech
Republic hold the title. A separate section is provided for titles whose existence
was verified in bibliographies, but whose issues have not yet been located and
examined by the compilers. The subject index at the back has a general outline
of the subject arrangement and then a complete list of all the titles given in
that arrangement. There are indexes for editors and place of publication. See

of serial titles was published from 1953-1975 as
one of the sub-series of the national bibliography. Like the sources listed above
it provides citations for periodicals and newspapers
without annotations that were published in a particular year in Czech. Some Slovak
titles are also included. The information is gathered from Czech periodical and
newspaper issues received on legal deposit by the Library of the National Museum
and supplemented by titles from the National Library. The entries contain the
following information for each title: publication place, publisher, editor, frequency,
and which issues were published in this year. There is no information on the size
of circulation. The entries are arranged alphabetically by title with both newspapers
and journals listed together. There are lists of new titles, title changes, and
titles that ceased for each year, and indexes for subject and publication place.
This section of the national bibliography ceased with the 1974/75 issue. For periodical
coverage beginning in 1989 see the Czech National Bibliography

information for each: full title, place and dates of publication, frequency, publisher

P914 v.1-3
For periodicals published in the Czech
Republic during 1990, this source is quite comprehensive because its compilation
is based on an internal list from the Ministry of Culture of all periodicals registered
under a federal press law. The titles are grouped by subject. The information
provided in each entry includes title, place of publication, publisher, and frequency.
The third volume has indexes for titles, publishers, and places of publications,
as well as a table of contents. Some Czech-language titles published in Slovakia
are included. See the entry on the left that appears first in the section entitled
"Social and Historical Sciences."
For more recent titles (after 1990) you have
to use online catalogs, online bibliographic utilities, or the Czech National

contents of the CD-ROM is now available for free on the Czech

The Czechs have ceased publishing paper copies of all
sections of their national bibliography and instead are issuing that information
on quarterly CD-ROM's and have just recently made
the databases available on the Internet for free.
With the electronic versions the researcher can take advantage of the many access
points and limiting features that database searching provides. Installation of
the CD-ROM is simple and there is a choice between a Czech or an English language
interface. The choice of language interface occurs with the Internet version as
well. Regardless of the interface, Czech fonts should
be used for the best search results. Each successive CD-ROM issue is cumulative
and each one contains more and more retrospective entries as well.
The CD-ROM interface opens two frames, the left with a browsable list of the entire
contents of the database that appears to be in random order and the right with
the first record displayed. Note that what appears to be a simple title search
is really a keyword search of all the words in the title. What is presented as
a keyword search is really a type of subject heading search, for the Czech catalogers
assigned the keywords to the records. See the User's Manual available under the
Help menu for the numerous search possibilities. The issue from 3/2000 also
has a user's manual in English and Czech in .pdf format. The web-version also
has a help section. For a full description of all the sections available see the
main entry for the CD-ROM
on the Czech and Slovak National
Bibliography page in this course. What follows is a description of just the
sections for periodicals and articles. Clanky

journals and anthologies): 1989- present. There
is no coverage for the contents of local or company periodicals, children's and
youth periodicals. Medical, technical, sports coverage is incomplete. It does
include book reviews. This part of the database is searchable by author, title,
title of source, keyword, etc. UIUC has paper copies of the Clanky title.
See the annotation below for more information on holdings
and call numbers. This section is available on the Czech
National Library website. Periodika
vydavana na uzemi CR (Periodicals published in the Czech Republic): 1989-
present. It includes only those titles received at the National Library
through legal deposit. The language of coverage is Czech or any other language
published in the Czech Republic. Coverage is not complete due to sketchy compliance
with depository laws. This part of the database is searchable by title, previous
and subsequent titles, subject, keyword, publisher, etc. This section is available
on the Czech National Library website.

Sl58 v.1b The year 1705 marks the inception of Slovak
journalism when the first newspaper, Mercurius Hungaricus, was published
in Latin, but it was not until 1783 when a newspaper appeared that was published
in Slovak, Presspurske noviny. Thus, this retrospective
bibliography of newspapers and journals from Slovakia in the Slovak language
begins its coverage with 1783. This is the first volume of a large retrospective
Slovak bibliography of periodicals compiled and published by Matica slovenska.
It aims for complete coverage. An introductory
essay traces the development Slovak journalism and incorporates discussions of
the serial titles in lieu of annotations. Two valuable features are a chronological
index of titles that shows every title published in a particular year and the
union listing that indicates the libraries that hold the titles. The second
volume mentioned above covers newspapers and journals from Slovakia in languages
other than Slovak and complements the first volume discussed in this entry.
The features of the two are the same including the extensive introductory essay,
which for the second volume is on the development of foreign
language journalism in Slovakia.
The entries are arranged
alphabetically by title into 4 sections: the main section of Slovak titles from
Slovakia, and smaller sections for titles partly in Slovak, Slovak-Hungarian titles,
titles that were part of the First Czechoslovak resistance movement published
abroad from 1904-1918, and handwritten titles. The entries include information
on publisher, frequency, editors, and volume numbers. There are indexes
for place of publication, names, and chronology. See the entry on the right for
the title Slovacke novini which appears in the first volume.

This retrospective bibliography of newspapers and journals
from Slovakia regardless of language begins its coverage where the works
listed above left off, with 1919. This is the second volume of a large retrospective
Slovak bibliography of periodicals compiled and published by Matica slovenska.
It aims for complete coverage. An introductory
essay traces the development of newspapers and journals in Slovakia for the years
1919-1938 with particular emphasis on politics. Two valuable features are a chronological
table of titles that shows every title published in a particular year arranged
by subject and the union listing which indicates the libraries that hold the titles.
The entries are arranged alphabetically by title in 3 sections, the Slovak titles
from Slovakia, foreign language titles published in Slovakia, and titles that
the compilers were able to verify but not actually see in person. The entries
include information on publisher, frequency, editors, and volume numbers. There
are indexes for place of publication, names, publishers, printers, and chronology.

in 1936.

It aims for complete coverage. Introductory essays
in the volumes for 1939-1944 and 1945-60 trace the development of newspapers and
journals in Slovakia for those years. A valuable feature of these works is the
union listing which indicates the libraries that hold the titles. The first title
has a large chronological table of titles grouped by subject. No annotations are
included. The entries are arranged alphabetically by title and include information
on publisher, frequency, editors, and volume numbers. There are indexes for place
of publication and names. The volumes for 1939-1944, 1945-60, and 1966-1970 have
several additional indexes. See the entry below for Slovenske ovocinarstvo
which appears in the volume that covers 1945-1960.

of almanacs, yearbooks, and anthologies from Slovakia
regardless of language provide coverage from 1919 through 1965. They were
issued as part of a large retrospective Slovak bibliography of periodicals compiled
and published by Matica slovenska. It aims for complete
coverage. Besides Slovak titles and foreign language titles published on
Slovak territory, they also include Ukrainian and Hungarian titles published after
1918 in Bohemia and Moravia that were intended for these minority groups living
in Slovakia. Introductory essays in both volumes survey the development of these
genres in Slovakia for those years. A valuable feature of these works is the union
listing which indicates the libraries that hold the titles. Entries are arranged
alphabetically and include full title, authorship, imprint, size, and a brief
annotation. There are indexes for names, places, publishers, and printers. There
is also a chronological subject index. See the entry below which shows the data
for the first volume of Slovensky kras. The data for the other 5 published
volumes of this title appear span two pages in the bibliography so they are not
reproduced here due to space considerations.

B471 Issued as part of a large retrospective Slovak bibliography
of periodicals compiled and published by Matica slovenska, this bibliography of
calendars from the territory of Slovakia or in Slovak
(calendars in this sense are a genre of periodical) provides coverage
from 1701 through 1965. It aims for complete coverage.
The titles are arranged into two sections, the first for Slovak calendars and
the second for calendars in other languages. Within each section the titles are
given alphabetically. Entries provide full bibliographic data for each volume
and symbols to indicate which libraries hold the items in question. There are
indexes for names, places, publishers, and printers. Illustrations and a chronology
of titles appear at the end of the work. One of the outstanding features of the
retrospective bibliography series is the detailed bibliographic essays that serve
as introductions. This volume's essay is almost 100 pages long. See the image
below for a Hungarian calendar entitled Honti Naptar from the Slovak-Hungarian
border town of Sahy (Ipolysag).

Slovenska

3/2002 The Slovaks are publishing a quarterly
CD-ROM version of their national bibliography in addition to the paper
format. With the CD-ROM the researcher can take advantage of the many access points
and limiting features that database searching provides. Installation is simple,
but the instructions and interface are only in Slovak. Slovak
fonts should be used for the best search results. Each successive CD-ROM
issue is cumulative and each one contains more and more retrospective entries
as well.
The interface opens two frames, the left with a
browsable list of the entire contents of the database that appears to be in random
order and the right with the first record displayed. Note that what appears to
be a simple title search is really a keyword search of all the words in the title.
What is presented as a keyword search is really a type of subject heading search,
for the Slovak catalogers assigned the keywords to the records. Some help (in
Slovak) is available under the pull-down menu entitled "Pomoc" and also
if you click the "Pomoc" button in the search box. available. For a
full description of all the sections available see the main entry for the CD-ROM
on the Czech and Slovak National Bibliography page. What follows is a description
of just the sections for periodicals and articles.
Series B. Periodika: This bibliography
of periodicals published on Slovak territory regardless of language is on the
first CD-ROM and is mixed in with the other sections that comprise the "Knihy"
database. The entries give title and publisher and some subject headings, but
complete information about the publication dates and other details are not provided.
However, the database is searchable by many access points such as ISSN and search
limits may also be applied. The major problem with this system is that you cannot
search by genre, thus you cannot pull up a list of all the periodicals cited in
the database. UIUC has no paper copies of this title except the 1971
issue described above. Clanky:
articles from Series B-J: This section of the national bibliography appears
on CD-ROM 2. Again there are many access points and limiters for searching, including
author, article title, subject, journal title, etc. It includes articles from
Slovak newspaper and journals regardless of language that are received at the
National Library on legal deposit. The dates of coverage on the CD-ROM for Clanky
are 1978 to the present plus articles from Series
B-J from 1981- present. UIUC has paper copies
of the Clanky title which ceased with the 1998:12 issue. See the annotation

Although this index only
covers a few years, 1920-1923, it includes books
and articles published in Poland, Czechoslovakia,
Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Russia. It is not comprehensive but
it can be helpful. We include it under Periodical indexes for Czech and Slovak
because of the lack of comprehensive article coverage for these languages for
this time period. The volumes are divided geographically and then by subject within
each geographical division. There are author indexes for each volume. See the
entries on the right which are in the Czechoslovakia section in the 1923 volume

What has been published so far of this
large bibliography of articles from Communist and progressive newspapers and journals
is comprised of three sections, one covering 1924-1928
(dil 4), another from 1929-1932 (dil 3), and the
last 1933-1938 (dil 2). Dil 2 and 3 are published
in 3 physical volumes each with the Czech part in sv. 1-2 and the Slovak part
in zv. 3. Dil 4 has only sv. 3-4, the Slovak part, in print to date. Although
its title suggests that the contents of the bibliography will be solely about
communism, actually a large variety of subjects from art and culture to government
and education are presented. Within the three different date compilations the
subject arrangement of the citations is similar: Marxism-Leninism, Czechoslovakia,
International Relations, and Other Countries. The section entitled Czechoslovakia
has the various and detailed subject breakdown mentioned above. See the detailed
table of contents in the first volumes of each date set for specifics. As an example
of the organization of all the volumes, note that the list of 70 journals and
newspapers published on Czechoslovak territory from which the citations in the
Czech part (1933-1938) are extracted appears at the beginning of the book. The
Slovak part (1933-1938) analyzes 31 periodicals. Some are in languages other than
Czech or Slovak. Thus, for example, some are in German, Polish, Hungarian, or
Spanish. There are indexes for author, pseudonyms, names, and places. See the
image on the left for some entries on the writer Jiri Weil that appear in the
section for literature in the Czech part of the 1933-1938 set.

This work is a classic in the field of Slovak bibliography.
It spans Slovak literary production from the beginning of printing up
to 1900 including both books and articles
published in Slovak in Slovakia or abroad, translations into Slovak, and some
foreign language works published in Slovakia. Rizner's work, along with the later
supplement, are considered comprehensive enough for monographs that the large,
retrospective Slovak national bibliography project started its coverage where
Rizner left off, with 1901. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the surname
of the author or by the title if there is no definitive author. Periodicals also
have their own entries and some subject entries also occur. The entries for each
author are arranged chronologically. There are no indexes. The supplemental volume
follows the same organization. See the image on the left for entries by J. E.
