New Methodologies
  • Search portals based on Z39.50 (European Library (http://www.theeuropeanlibrary.org ), Karlsruhe Universitatsbibliothek (http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/hylib/en/kvk.html ))
  • Federated searching (e.g. Search Assistant)
  • Link resolvers (e.g., SFX)
  • Portable bibliographic software (RefWorks)
  • Podcasting

Federated searching
  • Defined by one librarian as “the consolidated retrieval of results in response to a query sent to several databases hosted by different online information systems. “
  • There are any number of services that provide for federated searches.  UIUC has developed their own system call “Search Assistant”.
  • Federated searching is usually described as a good starting point.  It does not allow for advanced search structures.

Link resolvers - SFX
  • Ideally, SFX will:
    • Enrich the standard database search by adding links to additional resources.
    • Will be found in more and more databases and catalogs.
    • Presently available in such databases as IBZ and through a variety of library portals and catalogs.
  • The reality is that it does work, but not always the way you expect.

  • CSA –Social Science
  • ISI – Social Science Database and Web Database
  • Scopus
  • Francis

20
IBZ
  • Index only—no full text
  • Good starting point for finding articles on a broad variety of topics
  • Search interface allows search by numerous indexes including the standard searches by author and total.  Search can be more refined to include searches by place, source, dates, language.
  • New feature, SFX link resolver, enrich searching.

23
CSA Social Science Search
  • Bibliographic citation with abstract, no full text, but links to UIUC and web via "Discover"
  • Includes the contents of 17.  The researcher can select all or specific titles to be searched
  • Advanced search offers a large number of indexes for limiting your search results.

  • 1984-present . One of databases of the Research Libaries Group (RLG)
  • Includes selective coverage of conference papers and chapters in edited collections.
  • Coverage primarily of West European publications
28
ISI Web of Science
29
Scopus
  • Indexes some 14,000 titles of which 2,850 are in the social sciences.
  • All are peer-reviewed titles
  • Coverage of some titles from 1960 to the present
30
Scopus

  • C.E.E.O.L.
  • Library Press Display
  • ISI Emerging Markets
37
C.E.E.O.L.
  • Currently one of the only full text databases for journals for the region
  • Large number of periodical titles
  • Advanced search allows for searching by author, keyword, language, subject and/or year.

ISI Emerging Markets
  • Search allows for limiting by country, language, content type and keyword.  It is also possible to search specific publications
  • English and vernacular language sources
  • Primarily keyword searching
  • List of sources somewhat difficult to interpret (“Law firms” category usually not a listing of firms but sources)

Regional Catalogs
52
Regional Catalogs
  • Most of the former Yugoslav republics have a common interface “COBISS”.  This system has very useful subsystems, e.g. SICRIS.
  • All of the Cobiss catalogs function as subject bibliographies since they include articles and dissertations as well as monographs.
  • All Cobiss catalogs also function as academic union catalogs in a limited way for each of their respective countries.
  • The Croatian National Library Catalog does not search articles but does include extensive retrospective information via their digital card catalogs.
