Slavic Digital Text Workshop 2006

For the past two years a four-day Slavic Digital Text Workshop has been offered under the aegis of UIUC's Summer Research Lab on Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. For details see the 2004 and 2005 programs. This year we are offering an abbreviated one-day version, to be held on Thursday, June 15.

During this one-day workshop, scholars and librarians will receive a brief introduction to some of the basic techniques that underpin the application of technology to humanities scholarship. In order to understand more about the research potential of digital approaches, students will learn about (1) Document analysis and DTD or schema design, (2) XML markup or encoding, and (3) web publication techniques using XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations). Each presentation will be followed by a brief hands-on segment during which students will work with a sample text using a popular software package known as <oXygen/>. Session 4 will include two special demonstrations on (a) publishing TEI encoded texts using custom-built software, and (b) harvesting records with standardized XML metadata from multiple data providers for use by aggregated search services.
