Introduction

(waiting from nex for info)

-add in blurb on general cut-off date with info exceptions

add to introduction if not in there-Where is the Newspaper Library?

Today's National Newspapers:

Today's editions of local, regional and national newspapers are held in the Newspaper Library.  To be certain that a particular newspaper is held in the Newspaper Library, look up the newspaper by title in NEXWorld, the Newspaper Library catalog.

Some newspapers are also located in departmental libraries throughout the campus.  The libraries with the larger collections of today's newspapers are the Communications Library, the Illini Union Browsing Room, and the Undergraduate Library.

Many of today's editions can be accessed online.  For a thorough listing of links to U.S. newspapers, see US NewspaperLinks.com.  Many newspapers with an online presence also have archives to articles from earlier dates.  Many of these newspapers charge a fee to access articles from the archives.  To avoid paying a fee check Lexis-Nexis, WSJ, New York Times within the Article Database page of the University of Illinois Library or check the Newspaper Library catalog.

Today's International Newspapers:

The Newspaper Library holds subscriptions to many international newspapers.  To be certain that a particular newspaper is held in the Newspaper Library, look up the newspaper by title in NEXWorld, the Newspaper Library catalog.

Some current issues of international newspapers are held in some of the UIUC departmental libraries on campus.  The Newspaper Library has information on the holdings in other libraries at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/nex/lists.htm.

For a fast reference to the major national and international newspapers, see Today's Edition of Major Newspapers Online

Historical Newspaper Research

Use print indexes when searching for newspaper information published prior to 1980 (more than 20 years ago).  Most online indexing does not cover ????.   For information on the specific dates of indexing for online newspaper indexes see (Paul's Link).  Location information regarding print indexes can be found by searching in NEXWorld.

Use an index to find specific newspaper articles on a topic.  Most indexes are created to go with a particular newspaper.  For instance, the New York Times Index indexes the New York Times.  When looking for the index to a particular newspaper, it is best to search by the title of the newspaper and the word "index".  International newspaper indexes' coverage varies.  Some indexes refer to more than one newspaper publication. (having trouble finding an example.?????)

After the articles are identified in the print indexes, search for the needed newspapers in NEXWorld.   The newspaper may be available in its original format, however most newspapers have been converted to microform.  For more information on microform, see What are Microcard, Microfiche, and Microfilm readers? To see a list
