Groeber Pamphlet Collection
The Groeber Collection reflects the scholarly interests of Gustav Groeber (1844-1911), Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Strassburg.
Professor Gustave Groeber was widely celebrated for the breadth of his interests. While his personal library was strong in general linguistics and classics, it was particularly rich in the literature of Provence and Italy. Because of Professor Groebers recognized position as a leading Romance scholar, he received nearly every brochure relating to Romance topics that was published in Germany over a course of more than thirty years, a collection totaling about 6,400 items.
This unique collection of books and pamphlets was purchased for the Library by University of Illinois President James during a visit to Germany in 1912. It nearly doubled the number of books in the University of Illinois Romance Library at the time, making it an important center of Romance material.
