The Rare Book & Manuscript Library's
Baldwin Collection
featured in the Association of Research Libraries' publication:
“Celebrating Research: Rare and Special Collections from the Membership of the Association of Research Libraries”

The volume is the result of a collaborative effort among 118 ARL member libraries on the occasion of the Association’s 75th anniversary. Hundreds of people from research libraries across the US and Canada were involved in the identification of potential collections to be profiled and in the writing and photography used in the volume. From these nominations, a single collection was selected from each library by an editorial team. The book may be viewed online at: http://www.celebratingresearch.org/.

STUDENT BOOK COLLECTORS WIN $1000 PRIZES
Collections to be Entered in National Contest

University of Illinois student Peter Zafer has won the Harris Fletcher Book Collecting Award for undergraduates. Sara Marie Schepis has won the T.W. Baldwin Prize for Book Collecting for graduate students. Sponsored by The Rare Book & Manuscript Library and the No 44 Society book collecting club, the prize winners receive $1000 towards a trip to New York in January 2009 for ‘Bibliography Week.’

Peter Zafer’s collection ran the gamut from historian Edward Gibbon’s; Decline and Fall, to books on architecture and philosophy. Befitting her field of study, Sara Marie Schepis’s collection focused on the genre of library-themed romances and other works where librarians “play a starring role.” Both collections will now be entered in a national contest sponsored by Fine Books & Collections. Over forty universities and colleges participate in this annual contest. This is the third consecutive year for University of Illinois participation.

Peter and Sara will speak about their collections at the next meeting of the No. 44 Society, on Wednesday, May 7 at 3:00 p.m. in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library, 346 Main Library, 1408 West Gregory Drive, Urbana. All are welcome to attend.

For more information about the No. 44 Society and its annual book collecting contests, please call 333-3777, or visit; www.library.uiuc.edu/rbx/no.44.htm.
