Susan Stout Memorial Library Overview

Synopsis of the Collection

Providing a current collection of core materials for research and study in the field of psychology, the Susan Stout Memorial Library is a major resource for the faculty and graduate students of the University's Psychology Department. The Library's non-circulating collection of books and journals is supported by an endowment fund with contributions from the family and friends of the late Susan Stout, a former UIUC Psychology graduate student.

Collection Description

The emphasis of Stout's collection is on journals. Approximately 80 journal titles related to the research and instructional programs of the department are available. Most of these are now available electronically. The library also maintains a small, selective book collection including reference works, textbooks, and volumes of selected series. Books are classified and shelved by broad subject categories so that it is possible to browse for books on a particular topic.

A larger collection of psychology journals and books can be found in the Education and Social Science Library and the main stacks of the UIUC Library. Other UIUC libraries, such as the Biology Library, the UIC Health Sciences Library, and the Applied Health Sciences Library also have materials pertinent to research in psychology.

Library Services

A staff member of the Stout Library is available to help you with materials and reference questions during posted weekday hours. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance. Reference help in psychology is also available in the Education and Social Science Library (244-1864) which houses the main collection of psychology reference sources and is located in the UIUC Main Library.

Keys

Psychology faculty, graduate students, and honors students may obtain a key to the library, which allows them to use the facilities when the library is closed. The door key is changed each fall. The annual key donation is $10.00.

Circulation Policies

Stout Library does not charge out books to patrons. Books from any of the U. of I. campus libraries or the cooperating institutions throughout the State may be returned through the book drop located in the hallway near the Stout Library (Room 819, Psychology Building). Reserve materials, short-term loan materials (such as bound journals), recordings, and special Interlibrary loans, however, must be returned to the appropriate library.

A coin and card-operated copier is available in the library for your convenience. There is a second copier for use by faculty and graduate students authorized to bill copying to a contract or grant number. Since we are a small library, with key access, we specify that library materials do not circulate, but are for room use only. Certain exceptions to this may be granted, depending on the nature of the situation.

Online Catalog

A public access computer for searching the University Library System is available in the Stout Library. It also provides users with immediate access to I-Share, which consists of over 60 cooperating institutions throughout the state.

Both the Online Catalog and the journal citation databases can be accessed from your home or office computer through the Internet. If you are off campus, you will need to use your Bluestem password to access UIUC-restricted services.
