Workshops and Educational Efforts
As a service to the educational program of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS), we have offered to train interested students in preservation methods and techniques. We have done this through workshop series which may occur over several weeks or months.
Staff member, Casey Westerman, assists GSLIS students at a box making workshop.
Through our Volunteer Program, GSLIS students arrange to work with our staff for at least two hours a week throughout a semester. We teach these volunteers each of our work processes as their time and talents allow. Such hands-on experience can provide them with insight into the practical aspects of preservation issues which, we hope, will guide them in their future library work.
Volunteers Jeff Makala, John Calia, Susan Fagan and Susan Golden work on projects.
In the summer of 1998, volunteers, Susan and Susan, and staff member, Aaron, worked on a special project for the Rare Book Room.
They cleaned and stabilized the ragged edges of large plates of astronomical illustrations.
Sprinkling Opaline powder onto the plates: with gentle rubbing, much surface grime can be removed.
