Due to our desire to simultaneously serve the needs of the collection
materials sent to us and the wishes of all the libraries, we request that units
fill out the streamers completely, clearly, and accurately. In many cases, we
are left guessing about what is required or desired when streamers are not
completed. Unless a unit is sending a sealed box of pamphlets to be pam-bound,
every item should be sent with a completed streamer. Completing these streamers
assists with record-keeping on our end and helps to ensure that you get material
returned in a timely and efficient manner.
- Broken materials of any form (monographs, journals, pamphlets,
etc....) get a green Preservation and Conservation streamer
(GEN 204). They will be sent through our triage process and treated as required.
- Unbound serials get a yellow binding
streamer (GEN 39-89 Rev. 10/99). This should be fully and accurately completed
to ensure that you are getting what you want back and not an incorrectly bound
piece. For the purpose of an example: if one sends down a journal with the
title POPULAR MECHANICS and does not clearly print the title, one's library is
likely to get their volume back bound in a cover labeled POPULAR MASOCHISM.
Please assist us in avoiding such unfortunate incidents.
- Undamaged Paperback Monographs should be sent to the Bindery Preparations Unit.
Guidelines for this are outlined in the Binding Guidelines.
- Materials in Process (used by Technical Services staff only) that require repair
should get a salmon-colored streamer (GEN 300). These materials will
be sent through the same triage process as other broken materials and treated as required.
Please be sure to indicate, however, whether the piece should be returned to the owning library
or a Technical Services unit.
