Introduction

Wetlands are areas that are permanently or periodically covered by water. They are very important ecosystems that serve as filters to contaminants and are home to many endangered and threatened plants and animals. Agriculture and urbanization have made wetlands scarce in Illinois and other parts of the world.

There are many differing types of wetlands, and various words are used to describe wetlands including bogs, fens, kettle holes, marshes, muskegs, peatlands, riparian areas and swamps. There exists a plethora of information about wetlands, so narrowing your search to a particular type of wetland or geographical region is more likely to help you find useful information.

Subject Headings

There are many Library of Congress subject headings which you may want to use to look for books and journals in Illinet Online (the online catalog for UIUC and 65 other libraries in Illinois). You can divide many of these subject headings further by geography (e.g. wetlands conservation-- Illinois).

General Databases

Check out Tips for Searching Databases for pointers
on constructing searches.

The type of paper you are writing will help you determine what types of databases you will want to use to find articles about wetlands. Does your instructor require scholarly journals or magazine articles as sources? Many magazines have articles about wetlands that may serve as valuable sources. However, if your instructor prefers that you use scholarly, research-oriented journals, you may need to search specialized databases.

In order to find articles, you will want to go to the articles databases page or use the suggested databases below.

Click here to go to a listing of Article Databases.

Here are a couple of recommended general databases:

Info Trac (1980-)

This database indexes articles from magazines and journals inmany academic disciplines. It includes both scholarly and research-oriented articles. Many of the articles are full text.

sample searches
:

  • wetlands and Illinois finds articles about wetlands in the state of Illinois
  • wetland and conservation finds articles about wetland conservation
  • wetlands and plants finds articles about wetland plants

Periodicals Abstracts (1987-)

Index to 2,049 general and academic journals covering many fields of study.

Wilson Select Full Text (1994- )

This database indexes over 800 magazines and journals. It provides full text articles and citations.

sample searches
:

  • wetlands and animals finds articles about wetlands animals
  • wetlands and ecology finds articles about wetlands ecology
  • bogs or fens finds articles about either bogs or fens

Specialized Databases

After searching the general databases, you may want to try a database specialized for the biological sciences or sciences for more research oriented articles on wetlands.

Here are some specialized databases to try:

Biological Abstracts (Biosis) (1969- )

Major database of the life sciences indexing over 6000 journals. This database will provide you with many citations for wetland articles. A handout with suggested tips and strategies for searching Biological Abstracts is available at the Biology Library as well as online.

sample searches:

  • do a subject search for hellbender or Cryptobranchus alleganiensis to find articles about the hellbender salamander
  • do a subject search for wetlands and pollution to find articles about pollution in wetlands
  • do a subject search for wetland animals and Illinois to find articles about wetland animals of Illinois

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (1971-)

Over 2,000 records are indexed per month along with abstracts. Includes coverage of biological and ecological aspects of marine, freshwater, and brackish environments; aquatic pollution and environmental quality; physical and chemical oceanography and limnology; marine geophysics and geochemistry; aquaculture, and marine biotechnology.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management (1981-)

Indexes over 4000 scientific journals and other sources. Includes a great deal of information on water resources, water pollution, and other environmental issues.

sample searches:

  • search peatlands and England to find articles on peatlands in England
  • search swamps and Florida to find articles about swamps in Florida
  • search marsh and birds to find articles about marsh birds.

Fish and Fisheries Woldwide (1971-)

Covers thousands of journal articles, books, monographs, pamphlets, conference proceedings, symposia, government reports, theses, dissertations, and scientific periodicals.

Current Contents (1993-)

Indexes tables of contents and bibliographic data from 7500 scholarly research journals and books. Very good coverage of major journals in the life sciences. Current Contents will be most useful to you for finding citations to scholarly and/or technical articles.

Maps

Illinois Wetlands Maps- The Illinois Natural History Survey Library (196 Natural Resources Building) has a collection of topographic maps of the wetlands in Illinois. These maps locate and classify the states wetlands and rivers and lakes. Ask for assistance at the desk for the use and location of these maps. An index is available to help you find the area of Illinois you are interested in.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Maps (FEMA)- The Water Survey Library (2204 Griffith Drive) has a collection of FEMA maps. These maps are primarily used by property owners to determine the flood risk of their properties. They include information on floodplain boundaries and have flood elevations. Each map is numbered and there is an index map to find the corresponding number to an area in question.
