New Search | Descriptions and Examples
Welcome to the frequently asked questions for the New Titles List.
Please see our examples page for a detailed explanation of the various options and examples on how to use them.
A title is considered new if it is added to a departmental library's collection that does not already have a copy the work. For example, the English Library purchases and adds Sylvia Plath, Method and Madness, published in 1975, to their collection. If the English Library does not own another copy of this title, it is considered a new book. Even if the Undergraduate Library already owned Sylvia Plath, Method and Madness, the book would still appear as a new title for the English Library. The focus of the New Titles List is to serve as a tool for the individual libraries within the University Library, not necessarily for reflecting titles that are new to the library as a whole.
The date may also be misleading in a multi-volume work. In these cases, the publishing date is often considered a range, starting from the date the first volume was originally published untill the final volume was published. If the series has not yet ended, the New Titles List will usually display just the first date.
Titles are not added to the system until after they are received, cataloged, and shelved. There is a slight time delay as new books are added to the system only once a day. As a result, titles will often not appear until the day after they are shelved. If there is a title that you believe should have appeared in the new titles results but has not, please let us know. Mentioning the title as well as many details as you can will help us determine the problem. If you are looking for a specific title, the catalog will have more information on the status of the book.
RSS is a technology that allows distribution of content at semi-regular intervals. Using RSS aggregators, also known as RSS readers, makes it possible to follow the new titles that are released without having to go to the webpage and to re-execute your search each day. There a large number of aggregators and you may wish to browse the wikipedia listings to find one for your system. There are also websites which act as aggregators such as such as Bloglines. Clicking the "Create RSS Link" button shows a link that can be copied and pasted into your RSS aggregator.
