As a scholar, there are many actions you can take to help regain control of your system of communication. Please consider the following:
- Deposit your preprints, postprints, conference papers, and other work in IDEALS, the new University of Illinois institutional repository. Most publishers permit depositing postprints in such repositories. Check the Sherpa directory, to see what your publisher allows. More about IDEALS...

- Consider submitting your work to Open Access journals, and supporting other new forms of publishing. More on OA and other publishing options...

- Encourage research funding institutions to subsidize Open Access publishing. More on OA publication funding...
- Avoid submitting your work to publishers who charge prohibitively high prices. More on journal cost awareness...
- Negotiate with publishers to unbundle your rights and retain some control over your intellectual property. More on managing your copyright...

- Keep up to date on the issues. More on current awareness...
- Discuss funding and promotion criteria with university administrators and decision-makers in your department. Work within your field's scholarly societies to raise issues of concern.
- Collaborate with university librarians, especially those in your subject area, to help ensure that wise collection and subscription decisions are made.
- Educate yourself about your rights to share articles, images and other intellectual property with your students by reading the Know Your Copy Rights brochure.
