COLLECTION: Frank Scheibenreif recordings of Slovak, Czech, and Gypsy music
LOCATION AS OF 2001: University Press Building storage area (sorting shelves
close to alley entry, near beginning of King Collection LP stacks)
PROVENANCE: Donated by Rudy Scheibenreif (University of Illinois alumnus and son
of Frank Scheibenreif, host of Chicago radio station WSBC show, "Slovak American
Radio Review"
WHEN ACQUIRED: June, 1993
DESCRIPTION: Total of 1,001 recordings, including 753 78-rpm, 140 45-rpm, and
108 LP discs; and one book: Demo, Ondreij. Klenotnice slovenskych ludovych
(Bratislava: 1981) [M1784 Z13 - a collection of folk songs] Many of these
recordings were issued in Czechoslovakia and other eastern European countries
prior to World War II. "A majority of the [Scheibenreif radio] program was
playing of his beloved recordings ...the accumulation of pieces he personally
brought back on his numerous trips to his beloved homeland, as well as those he
received as gifts from his broadcasting peers in Czechoslovakia." (Biographical

ARRANGEMENT "MO— - —" numbers have been assigned to a portion of this
collection. Recordings are not as yet (2001) interfiled with other holdings in
the University Press Building storage area, pending inventory against title list
to ascertain whether processing has been completed and donor bookplates have
been affixed to record jackets.
ACCESS/FINDING AIDS/BIBLIOGRAPHY: collections File folder ("Scheibenreif,
Frank")
includes lists of individual recording's (by record label and title), copies of
correspondence between Rudy Scheibenreif and Music Librarian William McClellan,
several photographs of Frank Scheibenreif, and a brief biographical sketch.
