Reeves
COLLECTION: George Reeves Studio Collection
LOCATION AS OF 2001: Largely dispersed or discarded. Items with Reeves'
signature are being set aside in the University Press storage area as they come
to light (as of 11/2001, small pile on vocal music shelf range)
PROVENANCE: Estate of George Reeves (1893-1960, faculty member of School of
Music 1954-1960.
WHEN ACQUIRED: 1960
DESCRIPTION: Vocal sheet music, piano-vocal scores, chamber music scores/parts,
miniature scores, miscellaneous music editions, and a few recordings:
approximately 600 items were included in this collection prior to dispersal.
Reeves was associated as vocal coach and/or accompanist with many well-known
singers and instrumentalists, including Lotte Lehmann, Lauritz Melchior, Ezio
Pinza, Maggie
Teyte, Jennie Tourel, Pablo Casals, and others. Much of his studio collection
was in poor physical condition in 1960 when it came into the possession of the
Music Library. Presumably some materials were discarded shortly thereafter
rather than being added to Library holdings; items once cataloged may have been
withdrawn subsequently due to wear or loss; and it is possible that a
substantial number of editions may remain among uncataloged Music Library
holdings (although impossible to document lacking Reeves' signature on
individual items).
ARRANGEMENT: Dispersed, except for a comparatively few items with Reeves'
signature set aside in the University Press Building storage area.
ACCESS/FINDING AIDS/BIBLIOGRAPHY: No list exists of individual items.
Collections File folder ("Reeves") includes general description prepared in
1960, along with a memo from Burr McWilliams with specific recommendations;
correspondence to and from Music Librarian William McClellan (1983); brief
biographical notes; and photos (including newspaper clipping of 1959 with photo
of Reeves and University of Illinois violinist Homer Schmitt).
