COLLECTION: Gabriel Magyar donation of Dvorak, Mandel-Merel, and Amely Heller
items

PROVENANCE: Gift of Gabriel Magyar, retired faculty member of the School of
Music.
WHEN ACQUIRED: 1981
DESCRIPTION: Prof. Magyar donated a piano-vocal score of A. Dvorak's Stabat
Mater (see below), which includes a dedication in Dvorak's hand to his
friend, J. Mandel-Merei. Magyar received this score from Mandel-Merei's
daughter, Sarolta Merei, who had been studying music at the Royal Hungarian
Franz Liszt Conservatory at the same time as Prof. Magyar. Along with the score
Magyar submitted a photograph of J. Mandel-Merei; an autographed portrait of the
violinist Amely Heller; and a copy of Heller's book, H.W. Ernst: Im Urteile
seiner Zeitgenossen (see below); along with several letters and a clipping
from the period 1905-7.
