COLLECTION: John Francis Garrett collection of jazz and classical music
resources
LOCATION AS OF 2001: Dispersed among Music Library holdings in
circulating stacks. Special Collections, or University Press Building storage
area.
PROVENANCE: Donated by Garrett's nephew, Calvin L. Owens, of Champaign, Illinois
WHEN ACQUIRED: December, 1990 - January, 1991
DESCRIPTION: Gift consisted of 2,159 items, including 407 classical recordings;
1,375 jazz, dance, and popular music discs; 175 movie soundtracks and original
cast sound recordings; and 202 books, with heavy emphasis upon movies and
Hollywood personalities (non-music materials may have been transferred to other
units within the University Library). Recordings are all 33 1/3- or 45-rpm
discs.
ARRANGEMENT: Dispersed among cataloged or uncataloged holdings of the Music
Library.
ACCESS/FINDING AIDS/BIBLIOGRAPHY: No list exists of individual discs and books
included in this collection. Collections File folder ("Owens, Calvin L.")
includes correspondence relating to donation, along with general summary and
brief biographical sketch of John Francis Garrett.
