COLLECTION: Lloyd and Doris Farrar donation
LOCATION AS OF 2001: Dispersed among cataloged holdings in circulating and
Special Collections areas of Music Library; uncataloged items in University
Press storage area and Special Collections cataloging backlog cabinets; some
materials were not retained.
PROVENANCE: Personal library of Lloyd and Doris Farrar.
WHEN ACQUIRED: March 1996
DESCRIPTION: Donation consisted of 662 items, including 42 books, 7 antiquarian
items, 32 scholarly editions and anthologies, 279 items of sheet music, 13
choral octavo editions, 192 scores and/or sets of parts, and 97 miniature
scores. Strong emphasis upon percussion and wind ensemble music. Antiquarian
materials include, among other items, four 19th-century church and school song
collections, and a commonplace book (Christian Greenwald: His Book...
[1846]). Also included scattered issues of three music magazines, and manuscript
materials (Xaver and Phillpp Scharwenka). Certain of Farrar's personal
collection of musical instruments were donated to the University of Illinois and
are currently (2001) under the jurisdiction of the Sousa Archive for Band
Research.
ARRANGEMENT: Cataloged materials dispersed among circulating and Special
Collections holdings in the Music Library; uncataloged items arranged by medium
of performance/composer/title in the University Press storage area. As of
September 2001, some editions may remain in the Special Collections cataloging
backlog cabinets on the upper level of the Music Library.
ACCESS/FINDING AIDS/BIBLIOGRAPHY: Two detailed lists by title of donated items
are filed in the Collections File folder ("Farrar, Lloyd P. and Doris V."),
along with correspondence between Lloyd Farrar and Music Librarian William
McClellan.
