PROVENANCE: possibly from collection of George Reeves, former School of Music
faculty member
WHEN ACQUIRED: 1960, if acquired with music from Reeves' estate
DESCRIPTION: Ten-page manuscript score, orchestration of Beethoven's "Erlking,"
as completed by Reinhold Becker and published in 1897
(pl. no. 6576, 14 pp.; included in binder with Bartok ms.). Note on page 14: "Margit
Varro/Chicago, Ill./ Hungarian pianist, friend of Bartok"
(signed by Scott Goldthwaite, University of Chicago [later School of Music
faculty member, University of Illinois]). A. L. Ringer: "Hitherto
unknown to Bartok scholars, it was discovered a few months ago among
uncatalogued holdings of the University of Illinois Music Library ... in
a stack of sheet music most of which belonged to the late George Reeves." (Musical
Quarterly 52, no. 3 [1966]: 308)
