Accessing Electronic Print Reserves
1. From the Music Library’s
web page
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/mux/ (or any of the library's web pages), select
UIUC Library Online Catalog
under ‘Catalogs’ (or
Library Catalogs
from the blue navigation bar running along the lefthand side of the screen). The
direct URL for the online catalog is
www.library.uiuc.edu/catalog/.
2. Select course reserves--it's the
third option on the list. At the next screen, you'll see a blue box with options
to search by instructor or course.
3. To search by instructor, click on the
downward arrow next to the instructor field to view the names of all the
instructors who have course reserves this semester. They should be listed in
alphabetical order by last name. You must select one of the instructors in this
list--you can't simply type in the instructor's name, although you can type in
the first letter of the last name to jump to that letter in the list.
4. You may also choose to search by your
course. To do this, click on the downward arrow next to the course field to view
all courses with material on reserve this semester. The courses are arranged
alphabetically by department. You'll see the department abbreviation followed by
the course number and the title of the course. Select your course from this
list.
5. Next, hit the search button at
the bottom of the box. This should bring up all course materials for this
instructor or course--including library books, personal copies, and electronic
reserves.
a) Library books and scores
will be listed in rough alphabetical according to the first letter of the
title. Entries will say "Library Location: Music Reserves." (Remember that Music
reserve materials can't leave the library; however, they can be checked out for
two hours at a time, or overnight if you check them out an hour before closing.)
Next to the library location, you'll see a call number. Write down this number
for the book(s) or score(s) you want and give it to the desk attendant, who will
get the materials for you. Some books will say "Multiple Holdings. Click for
details." This means that the library has more than one copy of this book--one
copy is in Music Reserves, but there may be additional copies at other libraries
on campus. If you click on "Multiple Holdings" and scroll down the screen you'll
see the different holdings. At least one will say "temporarily shelved at Music
Reserves." However, you may see other copies that are available for regular
(non-reserve) check-out in the Music or at other campus libraries. Those might
be a good option if you decide you want the book for longer than two hours.
b) Personal copies are books and
scores that belong to the professor, which s/he has placed on reserve for your
class. These books cannot leave the library, even overnight an hour before
closing. The procedure for checking these books out is the same as for library
books: just write down the call number for the desk attendant.
c) Print E-reserves are book
chapters, journal articles, scores, lecture notes, or other photocopied material
that your professor has placed online for the class to access. All of the
e-reserves for your class will be grouped under a title such as "E-reserves for
_________" (course/instructor). Click on this title, and you will see the
e-reserve record. Scroll down until you see the underlined words "Click here to
access electronic reserve material for this course/instructor." This is a
hyperlink. Click on it to view a list of all the different items on electronic
reserve for your class. When you see the one you want to view, just click on
that item in the list. At the next screen, click on the words "View the reserve
document." The document will come up on the screen, prefaced by a copyright
warning. You can print out the document by using the print icon--if you are at
the Music Library public terminals, it will be charged to your university
account. If you are at a computer lab or at home, follow the appropriate
printing procedures.
You can access e-reserves directly by typing in
the URL:
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/ereserves/querycourse.asp . From this page, you
can find your course (they're listed alphabetically by course number). Remember
that this list is just for electronic material; it will not include any
library books or personal copies your instructor may have on reserve physically
within the library.
