Special Equipment and Facilities in the Music Library
Listening Carrels
The music Library has 8 carrels equipped with turntables, 12 with cassette playback units, and 12 with compact
disc players. Carrels are provided with instructions for use.
Listeners apply for listening stations at the Special Collections Desk on the second floor. An identification card
must be submitted in exchange for a key to a station. No advance reservations are taken. Listeners are
responsible for locking carrels and returning keys before two hours have elapsed. If they wish, listeners may
apply for an additional two-hour period.
Listening Rooms and Equipment
Five listening rooms are available for two-hour periods for individual or group use. Application procedures for listening rooms are the same as for listening carrels. Up to a week in advance of the time requested, groups of three or more may reserve a listening room for a specific time period for use with library materials. Each listening room is equipped with a turntable, cassette playback unit, compact disc player, loudspeakers, table and four chairs; some rooms are also provided with pianos.
Pianos
Studio pianos are located in listening rooms 3, 4, and 5; a grand piano is located in the seminar room, and a player piano in listening room 2. Library pianos are intended for use with library materials--e.g., for use with recordings, non-circulating scores, or for playing through music prior to checking it out for home use--rather than for general practice.
Seminar Room
The Music Library seminar room is equipped with a turntable, cassette playback unit, compact disc player, loudspeakers, projection screen, grand piano, tables, and approximately 15 chairs. This room also features a connection to the UIUC network. To schedule semester-long classes in the seminar room, apply in 3034 Music Building; otherwise individuals and groups may use the seminar room, when it is not scheduled for classes, under the same conditions and regulations which apply to listening rooms.
Microform Viewing
The microform reading area is furnished with the following equipment:
Microfilm readers (6)
Reader-printer for microfilm and microfiche
Microfiche and microcard readers
Other Equipment
Library users may request the following at the Special Collections Desk for use in the Library listening and
seminar rooms:
Reel-to-reel tape players (1/4 and 1/2 track)
VCR players (VHS and Beta)
DVD players
Laser disc player
78 rpm record player
Research Carrels
Research carrels are assigned to graduate students in music or to music undergraduates who are writing theses. Preference will be given to doctoral students in music. Apply in 2146B Music Library. Keys must be returned or renewed at the end of each academic year and summer session.
Copying Library Materials
N.B. All responsibility for possible copyright violations, whether of recorded or printed materials, lies with the
library user rather than with the Music Library. Copyright warning notices appear on all copy machines and
playback equipment.
Printed items: Two copiers are located near the first floor circulation desk and one copier is located by the
Special Collections Desk on the second floor. Enlarged or reduced copies may be made. Users must provide
their own change or copier card; a Value Card Teller is located near the copy machines on the first floor. A
copier card for use by School of Music teaching personnel may be requested from the circulation desk.
Microfilm, microfiche: Copies may be made on the coin-operated Canon PC90 reader-printer
located near the Special Collections Desk. A by-pass key for use by School of Music teaching personnel is
available at this Desk as well.
Sound recordings: Library machines are equipped for playback only; patrons wishing to record must bring their
own recording equipment to the library, including a patch cord terminating in two mini-phone, two RCA-type
connectors, or a 1/4" stereo plug, as well as a blank cassette. Special permission is not generally granted for
recordings to be taken out of the library for copying purposes. The library reserves the right to prohibit recordings
from being reproduced on library premises.
