Charging Out Materials
Mathematics Library materials may be charged out at the circulation desk, located behind the curved part of the counter (Map A-1), or from the online catalog.
In order to charge out library materials, you must have a valid University ID card (I-Card) or a special permit. Information on obtaining a permit is available from the staff in the Mathematics Library. Mathematics Library materials must be brought to the circulation desk to be charged out. Cards or slips must be filled out for reserve materials and for room-use-only materials.
It is possible to charge out materials from other libraries on this campus and from other academic libraries in Illinois whose holdings are on the online catalog. Brochures are located next to the terminals, but please don't hesitate to ask at the circulation desk for more information on using the online catalog.
You are requested to charge out materials at least 10 minutes before the library closes. There may not be time to process materials brought to the circulation desk after this time.

Returning or Renewing Materials
Books and journals are due on the date indicated on the yellow circulation slip inside the volume. When the Library is open, materials may be returned by placing them on the left half of the curved part of the counter (Map A-15). When the library is closed, materials may be returned by placing them in the book drop (Map A-16). Books and journals may be renewed--if no one else has requested them--by telephone, through the online catalog, or through a remote connection to the computer. To renew by telephone, call the Telephone Center (333-8400). To renew through the computer, follow the instructions provided by the interface or ask for assistance. In all cases, you will be asked to provide the complete call number of the piece plus your name and I.D. number. Please do not return mathematics books to other libraries (likewise, do not return books borrowed from other libraries to the mathematics library). Also, return all mail option books (received through campus mail) to the library from which it was borrowed. DO NOT RETURN LIBRARY MATERIAL THROUGH CAMPUS MAIL.

Other Changes with the new DRA library system:
Managing your library account
- You will be able to look at your own account and determine what you have checked out and what you have requested.
- Renew items yourself, online, up to 10 times.
- Books requested from another ILCSO member institution will not be charged to your account until you pick them up.
- The ability to see online whether you have any outstanding fines.
Other policy changes include:
- An individual who does not return a recalled book by the date specified on the recall notice will be charged fines of $1.00 per day, and may have his or her borrowing privileges blocked until the book is returned.
- If fines exceed $400, or if a patron has three or more "assumed lost" records on his or her account, borrowing privileges will be blocked.
- Items from any UIUC Library or any ILCSO library may be returned to any library unit on campus, regardless of where the patron originally charged them out.
- After 10 renewals, items must be returned to the library, or renewed in person with the item in hand.
- Use of the social security number as your library account number will be discontinued. Instead, the 14-digit number above the barcode on your "I" card and a four-digit pin number will be used to personally access your borrower record.
- The loan period for graduate students will be lenthened from 4 weeks to 16 weeks in most cases. Graduate students will, however, be subject to overdue fines.
- Faculty will be fined for overdue recalled items.
- The ability to cut and paste citations into documents and bibliographies and to e-mail citations to your account will continue.
Access to the Catalog
Access to the Illinet Online catalog in the libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will continue to be available through the new Gateway interface. On or about August 4, you will be able to choose between a web interface or a telnet interface for your catalog searching.
Overdue books/fines
When books or journals become overdue, two notices are sent. With the implementation of a new circulation system Fall 1998, Undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff members are all subject to fines. The fine for books is $.30 per day. For bound journals, the fine is $.50 per day. The maximum fine is $10.00 each time a volume is overdue, but an additional disciplinary fine may be assessed. When the material is 34 days overdue, the book status is changed to "Assumed Lost" and a billing notice is sent. All patrons, including faculty members, are assessed lost book charges if another patron is waiting to use the book or if it is one month overdue. The MINIMUM charge for a lost book from the Mathematics Library is $100.00. Patrons, including graduate students, are also responsible for fines on reserve books. Fines on daily items are $5.00 for the 1st day and $1.00 per day from day 2-45. Hourly items are billed at a rate of $2.00 for the first hour and $1.00 each hour after that for 48 hours. The Mathematics Library staff does not collect fines or lost book charges. You should pay as directed on the invoice sent by the University Business Office. The Mathematics Library clerk will help you with problems concerning fines, lost book billings, etc. You are requested to return all books and journals to the Library before leaving the campus for any extended period including summers and sabbatical leaves. Students & Faculty may borrow books from other institutions through inter-library loan. Books borrowed through inter-library loan are subject to the fine policy of the institution from which they were borrowed. Faculty and graduate students should be aware that they may be fined for overdue books from these libraries. Failure to pay such fines can result in the suspension of ALL borrowing privileges. You are requested to return all books and journals to the Library before leaving the campus for any extended period including summers and sabbatical leaves.
Reference
General Reference
Reference service is available at the circulation desk or by telephone: (217) 333-0258. Bibliographic questions should be directed to the librarian or graduate assistant.
On-Line Searching
As part of our regular reference service, we offer individual training sessions for online literature, such as MathSciNet or Zentralblatt Math, by appointment, free of cost. There are additional databases that can be searched for a cost as well -- these specialized databases charge the user and the Mathematics Library charges patrons in order to cover those fees. Please make an appointment with a librarian if you wish to make use of this service. The Mathematics Library also provides online ready reference service at no cost.
Electronic Reference
In accordance with the University of Illinois policy of electronic reference, e-mail service is available at library@math.uiuc.edu. Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be given priority reference service. Non-University members will be provided assistance as staffing provides. This service will provide information about books and articles, brief answers to factual questions, and suggestions for sources which might help answer your questions.
Bibliographic Instruction
The graduate assistant is available for bibliographic instruction primarily to the students and faculty in the Mathematics and Statistics departments. Bibliographic instruction (i.e., use of on-line catalog, MathSciNet, Other online databases, etc.) may be requested at the circulation desk or set up an appointment by e-mail at: library@math.uiuc.edu .
