Getting Started with Research

I'm looking for a paper from a conference. How can I find it?

The first place you may want to look is MathSciNet or Zentralblatt Math to see if and/or how the paper was published. Once you have determined whether the paper was published in a journal, book (monograph or conference proceedings), you should search the Online Catalog to see if the title is held somewhere on campus. Be search to search the book or journal title rather than the title of the paper you are looking for. If the title is not on campus, search the I-Share Online Catalog to see if you can order from another college or university in Illinois. If you cannot find it there, you can check the WorldCat database to see what institutions around the world own the title and then talk witha member of the Mathematics Library staff about how to order the paper.

If you are unable to find the paper at the U of I, doing a web search for the conference is a good idea. Use Google or Google Scholar to search for the name of the conference. Put the name of the conference in quotations (example: "Combinatorics in London 1998") to get more accurate results. You may find the paper at the conference website, or there may be further information about how to find a copy of it.

At any point in this process, please feel free to meet with member of the library staff for help in locating the paper. It's what we're here for, and we'll be happy to help you find your information. If you can't make it in to the library to meet with a librarian, you can reach the Mathematics Library by phone at 333.0258 or via e-mail: library[at]math.uiuc.edu.
