their analysis, Teschner, et. al. used an interdisciplinary scope from fields such as:
anthropology, education, mass communications, onomastics, speech pathology, folklore,
literature, and psychology . The great majority of items are annotated and include
critical commentary. The introduction devotes analysis to the State of the Art Spanish
speakers from the Caribbean and Mexico in the southwest regions of the U.S.

This compilation includes a valuable introduction by one of the founders and "fathers
of Chicano Studies," Dr. Luis Leal. The bibliography is divided in thirteen headings
representing different literary genre such as (poetry, novel, short fiction, theatre).
This compilation evidences the creative forces and a move forward of Chicano literature of
the 1960s and 1970s. It provides author and title indexes.

Zimmerman, Marc. U.S. Latino Literature: An Essay and Annotated Bibliography.

The author writes a second edition and revises fundamental questions about the overall
field of U.S. Latino literature. He relates this field to the way of conceiving the
literary corpus by new feminist and Chicano, Puerto-Rican and Cuban texts. Zimmerman
divides the chapters of his bibliography in eight sections. The first three sections are
under the subjects of identity, migration, with particular focus on these three groups.
The fourth section is about the question of postmodern perspective and includes a section
for Latinos in the Midwest.

An excellent source for collections on Latino's writers, although not comprehensive. This
selection would serve as a good introduction to Latino fiction authors whose works are
available in English and to those interested in tracing the origins and continuous growing
of Latino writers in the United States.

Series
The BiblioNoticias is a bibliographic compilation of sources produced by the members of
the Benson Latin American Collection, University of Texas Libraries. The series offers
bibliographies on Latin America, but also in specific areas for Latino Studies. The issue
No. #93, Jannuary 1998 is about Specialized Bilingual Dictionaries. This compilation is by
Craig Schroer and edited by Ann Hartness. It offers bilinguial dictionaries to specific
subjects.
BiblioNoticias Series
The Issue No. 101, September 1999 is about the "Curanderismo: Folk Healing in the
Mexican-American Community" which is a compilation produced by Margo Gutiérrez and
the editor is Ann Hartness. This source covers traditional healing practices sources in
print as well as electronic sources. It encompasses several disciplines: anthropology,
folklore, sociology, psychology, medicine and history.

It is an extensive source of nearly one thousand pages in length.

Created to provide literature, history, sociology, and scientific readers, access to the
lexicon of different regions in the Spanish speaking countries of the Americas. It gives
examples of the spoken word when the usage is restricted to only one region. Morínigo
also, incorporates indigenous words that belong to the corpus of the language. For ex.
words such as: "tabaco," "butaca," "batata,"
"cigarro," "hamaca," "alpaca," "tuna,"
"huracán," etc. The author also, takes into consideration words that have
filtered their connotation from the traditional peninsular Iberian Spanish to a more
regional usage. In summary this dictionary is a great accomplishment and has been
profusely used in our library.

The author considers vocabulary that has been introduced throughout the traditional
Castilian Spanish for each country. Hamel believes this is fairly complete first-hand
source for students who are learning the language, reading materials; also for teachers
and translators. The dictionary includes Latin American folklore but excludes scientific
and encyclopedic jargons. This guide also omitted "anglicismos" as they were
considered "unacceptable."

Explains the lexical aspect of the language rather than to the grammar which in Mexico
remains identical to the grammatical structure used in any other Spanish speaking country.
Hamel presents this source in its second edition and it is the second in a series
of three volumes, each one of the volumes is referred to a different subject. Hamel's
dictionary is useful for quick consultation of Mexican Spanish. It covers slang, and new
words borrowed from English.

In two volumes. The first one is on Chicano Writers: First Series, with a
Second Series released in (1992) and a Third Series in (1999). The editors focus on
Chicanos, these series give extensive treatment to Mexican American literature.
Biographical Dictionary of Hispanic Literature in the United States. Edited by
Nicolás Kanellos.
The author selects biographies of prominent Puerto Rican and Cuban American, and other
Latino writers in the United States not of Mexican descent. It remains the only source
that represents authors since 1989 from smaller Latino communities. Among these
writers reviewed are: Julia Alvarez, Junot Díaz, Abraham Rodriguez, Carolina Hospital,
Esmeralda Santiago, Cristina García, Gustavo Pérez Firmat, Pablo Medina, Martín Espada,

HAPI Online, the web version of the Hispanic
American Periodicals Index, provides bibliographic citations to articles and reviews

published in more than 400 journals in the social sciences and humanities from 1970 to the
present. Subjects covered include political science, foreign relations, economic
development, commerce, trade and industry, the environment, geography, history, sociology,

Humanities Abstracts
Humanities Abstracts is a bibliographic database which indexes more than 300 key
humanities publications, from well-known scholarly journals to lesser-known specialized
magazines. It covers the fields of archaeology and classical studies, art and photography,
folklore, general scholarship, history, journalism and communications, language and
literature, literary and political criticism, music and performing arts, philosophy, and
religion and theology. It indexes feature articles, book reviews, interviews, obituaries,
bibliographies, original works of fiction (including dramas and poems), and reviews of

JSTOR
Includes the full-text of over 100 journals in the areas of
African American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education,
finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, population
studies, sociology, and statistics. Most include full texts of complete journals from
their inception up to a "moving wall. " The moving wall is a fixed period of
time ranging, in most cases, from 2 to 5 years, that defines the gap between the most
recently published issue and the date of the most recent issues available in JSTOR.
MLA
The MLA International Bibliography indexes articles from over 3,000 scholarly journals,
theses, proceedings, and books on literature, language and folklore from 1963 to the
present. The indexing of scholarly journals is reasonably comprehensive for the major
languages of the world. The coverage of books and theses is not as inclusive as it is for
journal articles. Ancient and classical languages are excluded. Book reviews are also not
included. (search for book
reviews in other sources).
Project Muse
Project Muse, created by Johns Hopkins University Press and
the Milton S. Eisenhower Library, enables access to the full text of over 40 of the
Press's scholarly journals in the humanities, the social sciences, and mathematics.
Subjects include psychology, mathematics, history, American studies, history and
literature of medicine, black studies, literature, performing arts, human rights,
religion, childrens literature, philosophy, politics, and others. Coverage varies
among journals, usually from between 1994-1997 to the present.
Linguistics
and Language Behavior Abstracts
Non-evaluative abstracts for articles from serials, books, occasional papers,
monographs, technical reports, and other materials covering linguistics and related

Public Affairs Information
Service (PAIS)
PAIS International is a bibliographic index with abstracts covering the full range of
political, social, and public policy issues. Topics covered include economic, political,
and social issues, business, finance, law, international trade and relations, public
administration, government, political science, and any topics that are or might become the
subject of legislation. The database covers selected journal articles, books, statistics,
yearbooks, directories, conference proceedings, pamphlets, reports, government documents,
and microfiche. More than 1,600 journals and over 8,000 monographs are indexed each year.
Coverage includes documents published worldwide in any of six languages: English, French,
German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The subject headings and abstracts are in
English.
LexisNexis Government Periodicals Index
Lexis provides authoritative legal news, records and business information. It is an
excellent tool that create solutions and support critical decisions to users. In the
academic world is useful to research such topics as: Hispanics, Latinos, Mexican-American
combining these terms with subjects such as: labor, employment, migrant labor, migration,
border and more.
Newspapers
Houston Chronicle
The Houston Chronicle is both in English and Spanish. It has archives and search engines
on News, Sports, Entertainment, Advertisement, Classification Ads and Yellow Pages. Users
who are looking for specific sections can use the table of contents menu on the left or
the bar above to click on a specific section. There is a good article section by Ramiro
Burr for reviews on Music found under Entertainment.
Latinos and News Media Database which currently contains bibliographic listings and
annotations of 263 items from newspapers, journals, magazines and the Internet about
Latinos and the media that can be searched by author, title, source type, and topic. For
