Guide to Luthers Werke
 

Luthers Werke is a full text online resource that contains a complete collection of Luther's writings.  This online version of the Weimar Edition includes 117 quarto volumes.

**The texts in Luthers Werke are in German and Latin, NOT English.**

Searching:
Luthers Werke can be searched with a German or English interface.  Searches must be made using the language desired to be found (German or Latin).

To search, click on Suche/Search.

Types of Searches:

Stichwort/Keyword:  Type in a keyword you wish to search, such as "Katze", then click on the brown Search button at the bottom of the screen.

Titel/Title:  To find the full text of one of Luther's works, type in a part or the whole title, for example "An den christlichen Adel".  Click on the brown Search button at the bottom of the screen.

Band/Volume:  This search lets you search for particular volume of the Weimar Edition.  For example, you could type in "Schriften 22" to get a list of everything in the 22nd volume of his works. Click on the brown Search button at the bottom of the screen.

Entstehungsdatum/Date of Composition:  Use this search to find works that were composed during a certain time frame.  Put in the dates you wish to search such as 1509 and 1510 to see what Luther composed during this one year period. Click on the brown Search button at the bottom of the screen.

Sprache/Language:  If you only wish to search within German language or Latin language works choose either Deutsch/German or Latein/Latin.  Texte beider Sprachen/Mixed will conduct your search only in texts that are in both German AND Latin.

Further Limits:

You can further limit your search once you have chosen a type of search from above by utilizing the following options:

Suchoptionen/Search in:  This can restrict your search to items just in the works themselves (Luthertexte/Authorial Matter), or in the material about the works (Editorische Texte/Editorial Matter).

Sucheingrenzung/Limit to:  This search option allows you to be very precise about where you wish to search.  The options are: Texte (ohne Anmerkungen)/Main Text Only (excluding notes), Luthers Anmerkungen/Authorial Notes, Editorische Anmerkungen/Notes (Editorial Comments), Berichtungen/Notes (Corrections), Kritische Apparate/Variants, Bibelstellenverweise/Biblical References.

Results:

After conducting a search, your results will appear.  To read the full text of the item(s) that fulfill your search, click on the brown underlined text containing the title of the item.  If the file is large, you may have to confirm that you want to download that file.  When doing a keyword or title search, your search terms will be highlighted by a red ball in front of the term(s).  If you term(s) appears more than once in the text, a red arrow will direct you to the next instance of your term(s).  Click on the arrow(s) and they will direct you back and forth through the text to your term(s).

Blättern/Browe Function:

This database has a thesaurus which can be used in locating specific terms.  For example, you can type in "katze" as a keyword and click on the Blättern/Browse button.  You will see a thesaurus listing with a check mark in the box next to "Katze".  You can then decide if you wish to also include "Katzen" in your search by clicking in the box next to it.  When you are finished picking out terms, click on the brown "OK" button on the right of the list of terms.  You should then see the terms you picked listed in your search box.  You can then complete the search by clicking on the brown Search button at the bottom of the screen.  The same can be done with the beginning of titles.

Hilfe/Help:

At any point during your search you may click on the generic Help button (Hilfe-übersicht/Help Contents or click on contextualized help (Hilfe/Help).
