Policy for Graduate Assistants This policy briefly explains the role and training of graduate assistant at Modern Languages and Linguistics Library. Our program is education-based and treats GAs as GSLIS students seeking to extend their range of knowledge and skills in a library environment. At the start of each year the assistants will target a set of skills and bodies of knowledge that they hope to acquire over the course of the year. Working closely with the librarians, they will formulate an informal "program of study" that will delineate goals, objectives, skills and areas of knowledge. Assistants and librarians will meet regularly to assess the status of the program. Though education-based and called a program, there will be no exams, papers, etc. Library support staff will play an important role in the education of the GAS by explaining various important library functions such as the ordering and process of books and journals. Librarians may schedule tutorial sessions for the GAs with library staff. Note on schedules: GA receive 24 days of vacation (2 hrs is considered a day for GAs working 10-4 hours per week), two floating holidays and 12 (+ 13 more, if needed) days of sick time. GAs can take vacation whenever they like but need to inform the librarians at least 1 week in advance except in the case of emergency (such as your mother has just arrived on your doorstep!). Please note vacation times on our online calendar available through WebTools. Areas of Librarianship Collection Development Selecting materials
