Bibliographies are frequently compiled on individual notable writers such as Goethe, Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka and many others. It would be difficult to provide a complete list of author-specific bibliographies held at the University of Illinois, but one example will be given here to illustrate the common form of an author bibliography. The bibliography is annotated. The table of contents lists three distinct parts of the work. The first part contains references to editions of Hebbel's works, the second provides references to his letters, and the third organizes references to secondary literature by topic and theme. This work contains a section that explains all abbreviations, and it contains three separate indexes; an index to writers of articles and works about Hebbel, an index to individuals who received letters from Hebbel, and a subject index.

One of the most thorough and high quality bibliographies of any literature, particularly for the 17th Century. It is a census of the holdings of books in particular libraries. This edition is much more extensive than original edition, yet despite the improvements, some of the original citations were omitted.

Woods, Jean M. Schriftstellerinnen, Künstlerinnen, und gelehrte Frauen des deutschen Barock: ein Lexikon = Women of the German-speaking lands in learning, literature and the arts during the 17th and early 18th Centuries: a Lexicon. Stuttgart: Metzler, 1984.

This catalog is written in both English and German and lists the writings by women authors from about 1580 to 1720 (the Baroque and Early Enlightenment). It contains a very useful guide to the sources consulted to create this catalog and to verify references. It contains a key to abbreviations and an appendix, but no index.

These six volumes list the seventeenth-century books printed in Germany housed in the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel. Arranged alphabetically by author, if known, then title, the entries transcribe the title page of each book as well as list call numbers and cross reference to earlier catalogs. The set is an important source for anyone interested in books and printing of the German Baroque period.

This long awaited sequel to Katalog der Bücher und Broschüren des Deutschen Exilarchivs 1933-1945 which was published in 1989 contains a listing of all exile literature to be found in both the Deutsche Exilarchiv 1933-1945 located at the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt, as well as in the Sammlung Exil-Literatur 1933-1945 located at the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig. Since these two institutions were united into one "Deutsche Bibliothek" after reunification, it was decided to include the contents of the exile literature collection in Leipzig for this subsequent volume. Entries include information about the author, title, publisher, publisher location, physical description, notes, as well as the call numbers for the items in the respective libraries (or at both libraries).

The breadth of subjects and the depth of treatment of them makes this a useful source not only on the author but on 18th and 19th Germany. Black and white illustrations enhance the text.

The MLA Bibliography indexes articles primarily on the study and interpretation of literature. It also contains sections on linguistics and pedagogy. The organization of the index is by language, and then by country. Look under "Germanic Language and Literature, section German Language and Literature." (The MLA Bibliography has had some name changes. From 1922-1956, it was the "MLA American Bibliography." From 1967-1963 it was as an issue of Publications of the Modern Language Association (PMLA).

The electronic version of Die Deutsche Lyrik in Reclams Universal-Bibliothek covers almost 500 years of German lyric poetry and includes the work of over 500 authors from the 15th to the 20th century. It is published with the co-operation and support of Philipp Reclam jun., Stuttgart and covers all volumes of German poetry published within Reclams Universalbibliothek since 1945. It also contains the complete text of each poem and, in addition, contains material such as dedications and authorial notes which are an essential part of the original volumes. Publisher's prefaces and epilogues, introductions, editorial notes, biographies, glossaries and indices are not usually included.
