Newspaper Indexes
There are several online indexes to newspapers available to UIUC affiliates. These indexes have excellent coverage of major American newspapers, while their coverage of international ones is spotty. If indexing to foreign language newspapers through Lexis-Nexis is not sufficient for locating relevant articles on a subject, a searcher can at least locate dates of events through The New York Times Historical, which has full page and article images for 1851-1999. To search this database via Online Research Resources, click on the following link: The New York Times Historical.
Newslink.com WWW
Provides links to online newspapers from around the world.
Library Press Display UIUC
Provides access to over 250 international newspapers, which can be selected by country, language, or name. Past issues are available for 60 days.
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe UIUC
Full text articles from some prominent newspapers in French, Dutch, German, Italian, and Spanish can be retrieved through this database In two ways. One way is to enter searches in these languages (English operators [and, or, not] must be used to combine search terms). Another way is to use the Guided News Search. Under Step One, select "Non-English Language News" and under Step Two, choose a language. Diacritic marks should be ignored, except in German, where "E" must follow all vowels with an umlaut.
EbscoHost Newspaper Source UIUC
EBSCO Newspaper Source provides selected full text coverage for 238 sources, including 175 regional U.S. newspapers, 20 international newspapers, 15 newswires and newspaper columns, as well as 24 TV and radio news transcripts. This collection also includes cover-to-cover full text for USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor and The Los Angeles Times. Newswire coverage includes Associated Press Online, Asia Pulse, Canadian Press Wire, AP Worldstream and more. Full text transcripts are also included from Face the Nation, CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, 60 Minutes, OReilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes, CNN, CNBC, etc.
Ethnic NewsWatch UIUC
Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. A rich collection of articles, editorials, columns, reviews, etc. provide a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints -- the other sides of the stories. Free text searching and complete indexing makes Ethnic NewsWatch easy to search. This index can be searched in English or Spanish and is particularly useful for Latin American publications.
Access World News UIUC
Access World News features 1,500 international sources including translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government documents. Subjects covered include international developments related to politics, economics, science & technology, culture and business in Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, Pacific rim, Central and South America and the Middle East. All entries are full-text. Site also includes daily headlines and political and topographical maps. Covers 1996-present.
Proquest Historical Newspapers UIUC
Proquest Historical Newspapers contains two historical resources: New York Times (Sept 18,1851-Dec 31, 2001), and Wall Street Journal (July 8, 1889-Dec 31, 1987). Users have the option of searching all newspapers or individual ones.
Center for Research Libraries Foreign Newspapers and Ethnic Press (for North American Ethnic Newspapers) WWW
The Center for Research Libraries holds a rich collection of foreign-language and North American Ethnic newspapers on microfilm. Search CRL's newspaper databases to find holdings--searching by city rather than title is more effective--and then request the material through the UIUC Library's Interlibrary Loan, stating in the Notes field that the item is available through CRL.
