Cabeen and now includes six volumes along with numerous supplements, revisions, and parts, each written by specialists in the different time periods covered. Volume 1 covers the medieval period, Vol. 2 the 16th century, Vol. 3 the 17th century, Vol. 4 the 18th century, Vol. 5 the 19th century, and Vol. 6 the 20th century.

Before the issue for 1961/62, this series was titled "Supplementheft: Bibliographie" to Zeitschrift für romanishe Philologie, and the call number is consistent from 1875 to the present. Though the last issue to include French literature as a section was 1969/70, this bibliography cites many comparative literature studies which are relevant to French authors. Volume One of each issue has a series of indexes (authors, reviewers, persons as subjects, and topics), conference proceedings and festschriften. Volume Two covers linguistics and language studies (including French), and Volume Three contains citations for literature studies.

This Index combines the indexes of over thirty multi-volume reference sets published by Salem Press on English-language and foreign-language writers and their works. Preference is given to works in English and those translated into English. The Index is divided into two parts for easy reference: authors and titles. Consulting this "index of indexes" will save researchers a great deal of time.

Edited by Otto Klapp until 1985 and since by Astrid Klapp-Lehrmann, Bibliographie der Französischen Literaturwissenschaft is published annually and lists books, journal articles, essays in books, conference papers, and book reviews on all topics of French literature. Each volume includes, at the front, a complete list of acronyms and abbreviations (Sigles et Abreviations) and, at the back, two indices. Index Nominum lists the names of authors and the Index Rerum lists subjects (including authors). The bibliography proper is organized chronologically by period and begins with a section of Généralités and closes with one on "French Literature Outside of France." The material for each period is arranged alphabetically by subject. The entries follow two patterns: one pattern for books, and one pattern for journal articles, essays in books and conference papers. Examples of these two main patterns with explanations are provided below. Only the most frequently used abbreviations are given below. For a complete list, consult the section Sigles et Abreviations.

Discusses characters from 3,000 novels, dramas and epics of world literature. Major characters are treated in a 100-150 word article which assesses character, psychological motivation, development, possible flaws, etc. Minor characters are examined in shorter analytical articles. Identities and relationships are provided for "the most minor characters." Organization is by the English title of the work; the characters within each work are listed in order of diminishing importance. A character index allows one to find the character of an unknown work, and Magill also includes an author index.

Arranged alphabetically by English title of work, Masterplots provides synopses and critical commentary. Genres without discernible plots are treated in essay-reviews. In addition, each entry starts with quick reference information: type of work, author, type of plot, time of plot, locale, date of first publication, and a list of principal characters. Volume 12 includes an Author with Title index.

A project by the French Department at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, Vive Voix offers full-text transcripts and recordings in French of French poetry from the Middle Ages to the present. Users can search the database by author, title and incipit.

A full scholarly text on the medieval history of French prosody. The first two volumes (in a single binding) have individual tables of contents; the third volume includes a ten-page bibliography, a proper name index and a detailed table of contents for the complete work. Although the work is not suitable for quick reference because of its full-essay format, the aids in the final volume make it valuable for its thorough discussions of topics.

Frye's classic study is theoretical criticism and mostly lacks discussion of specific works. The four essays which comprise the book are "Historical Criticism: Theory of Modes," "Ethical Criticism: Theory of Symbols," "Archetypal Criticism: Theory of Myths," and "Rhetorical Criticism: Theory of Genres." A good topic and author index is provided.

Rather than a rundown of literature emphasizing authors and their works, this guide is a collection of essays on the various periods of French literary history from 1515 to the present. It conveys a sense of the literary tone of the various periods, but includes a precise index of authors' names, genres, and miscellaneous subjects. An excellent source for students preparing for master's or doctoral examinations.

Coward, David. A History of French Literature: From Chanson de geste to Cinema. Oxford: Blackwell Publishing, 2002.
Coward defines literature widely and thus includes genres and works generally placed outside of the traditional literary canon, such as film and "les best-sellers." He discusses the works of authors living and working in France and Francophone countries and mentions women authors as well as men. He places authors and their works in historical context as much as possible.

In writing his history, Adam considers not only the life and works of these authors but also the literary, social, and political influences on them. The learned volumes, serialized articles, prefaces, and manifestos collected in this Bibliopolis database reproduce the great literary debates which animated the 19th century. One hundred fifteen works and collections, thirty-three authors, and one hundred thousand pages of analysis allow the user to investigate the polemics and controversies in depth. The collection traverses the entire 19th century, beginning with Laharpe, who taught and provided a point of reference for many of his successors, and ending with Apollinaire and Proust, both highly prolific and distinctive critics.
