IFB: Informationsmittel für Bibliotheken
quarterly

Edited by Dr. Klaus Schreiber of the Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart, Germany, this online source of reviews of scholarly books on all areas of the humanities and social sciences has come to be one of the best book selection sources on the Internet for academic librarians. All issues are archived by date of issue. Within a given issue reviews are located under major subject headings. Although most of the titles reviewed are in the German language, increasingly works in other languages are also being reviewed in this source.

LSX: 028.05 CHO
index:

Choice offers quick and easy access for nearly any individual looking for reviews of monographs of scholarly research. Beyond the standard "Editorial," "Bibliographic Essay," and "Feature" articles, each issue contains reviews organized by four broad subject divisions. The division for the Humanities includes a sub-section for "Language and Literature," which includes subdivisions for scholarship on "Germanic," and "Romance," as well as on other languages. The reviews are generally one paragraph in length and summarize and evaluate the works. They usually include a broad audience recommendation. Each issue includes "Author," "Title," and "Topic" indexes.

World Literature Today
University of Oklahoma, 1927-, quarterly
MDX: 028.505 BO1
index:

While the first part of each quarterly issue is devoted to feature articles, often on a theme (such as "The Baltic Literatures in the 1990s"), the review section, "World Literature in Review," constitutes the major part of this journal. It is unique in attempting to cover literature in all languages--first the Romance languages, then the Germanic languages (including English), then Slavic, Finno-Ugrian, and Baltic, other European and American languages, Africa and the West Indies, the Pacific and Asia (including the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia). The reviews are written by specialists at American universities.

Bulletin critique du livre français
Association les Amis du Bulletin Critique du Livre Français
1945-, monthly
MDX: 015.44 B936

This is a set of half-page reviews, published monthly in journal format with no images or overall theme for each issue. The 450-500 scholarly reviews cover French language books, divided into the broad categories of littérature (all genres), sciences et techniques, and sciences humaines. Each of these is further subdivided by genre or subject. Each article uses a grading system to evaluate the quality of the book and its level of difficulty. Indexes of author and publisher names refer the reader to the number of the review article, and are cumulated annually. Often bibliographical references are given, as well as cross-references to other reviews in the BCLF.

Magazine littéraire
Magazine-Expansion
1966-, monthly
MDX: 805MAGL370
index:

Magazine littéraire has the look of a popular magazine, on glossy paper with color images, but the reviews are serious. Each monthly issue of about 100 pages has an extended set of feature articles on a specific topic, usually a well-known author but sometimes a subject. These are written by guest contributors, specialists on the theme. The general reviews are arranged under rubrics such as Essais, Science fiction, Art and Poches. There is also a Domaine étranger for books which have been translated from other languages. In addition to the review articles, there are columns on literary news and interviews with authors. An annual index is published, and some useful finding aids are available at http://www.magazine-litteraire.com.

La Quinzaine littéraire
SELIS la Quinzaine Litteraire
1966-, fortnightly
MDX: 028.05QU
index:

Published twice monthly in newspaper format, La Quinzaine littéraire is about 30 pages in length and has black and white images. Each issue has a theme featured on its front page but also contains standard rubrics for its reviews, including Romans/récits, Poésie, Histoire, Cinéma, Société and others. Reviews vary in length from extended to brief, and the Bibliographie section gives single-sentence summaries of recently published books in different areas of interest.

The following links connect to Books in Print and its foreign equivalents when available, or in some cases, to overseas booksellers who make their inventory available to search. Keep in mind that booksellers may not carry complete records of the publishing output of a country. More complete coverage may be found in the country's official record of book publishing in a print format. Also included are links to a few domestic vendors and bookstores specializing in foreign titles.
