- If searching for information about where specific journals are indexed, Ulrichs International Periodicals Directory is an excellent source. This tool is a guide to "149,000 currently available periodicals and since 1993, newspapers." (Reference and Information Services, 1995)
- Although useful, many students find Ulrich's difficult to use. If you run into any problems, contact your friendly local librarian!
- This aid is divided into five volumes; the first three are classified lists of serials, and the last two are indexes. The first three volumes are arranged by subject, and the heading "Library and Information Sciences" has many serial entries. Within these entries Library Literature is abbreviated "Lib.Lit." and Library and Information Science Abstracts is abbreviated "LISA".
- Ulrich's lists a variety of information on serials. The following fields are often included, but not always: pricing information, ISSN, date of original publication, former titles, and descriptions.
- At the end of the entry Ulrichs also lists if a periodical is refereed (if this information is known). Ulrichs generally gets this information from the serial publisher so it is not always accurate.
