Background Information on the Website

This site was constructed by three second-semester Library and Information Science students: Lynda Duke, Ruth Connell, and Casey Long, as a class project for LIS 316 in the Spring of 2000. The idea originated with Sue Searing, the head librarian of the Library and Information Science Library. Each semester the staff of the Library and Information Science Library is flooded with questions from LIS students regarding an LIS 380 assignment that entails identifying research articles and/or refereed materials in the field of Library and Information Science. The LIS Library staff believes that having an on-line resource will help guide both on-campus and LEEP students in answering these questions.

Purpose

This instructional website was created to provide LIS students with a better understanding of what kind of research is conducted in the field of Library and Information Science, how to identify a research article and refereed journal, and to assist students in developing strategies for locating appropriate materials for the LIS 380 assignment.

Methodology

In creating this site, each professor who had taught LIS 380 in the past (Bishop, Downie, Gasser, Malone, and Palmer) was consulted regarding the needs of LIS 380 students. The content and organization of this site was developed using the feedback from these professors. The tutorial content was obtained from the following resources:

In April 2000, the site was tested by staff and student workers in the Library and Information Science Library at the University of Illinois. These individuals provided feedback on the content and design of the site, and it was then modified to reflect those suggestions.
