The Size Designation![]() In general, an item is considered a quarto when it's height is between 29cm & 42cm, or it's length is between 25cm & 35cm. It is labeled with either an upper or lower case 'Q.'. For call numbers 001 through 399, the 'Q.' is ignored and shelved with non-q mateials. For call numbers 400 to 999 (including B.'s), however, the oversized materials are shelved in the East and must be separated out. THis is due to the compact shelving in the West, where each shelf is set to a standard height. Materials which exceed this height are labeled with a 'Q.' and shelved and decks 1East, and 5East. Folios are really big books. They are housed in the folio cabinets which line the north and south sides of the East decks. Official rules state that an item is deemed a folio when it's height exceeds 42cm or it's length exceeds 35cm.
