Smart phones can hold your online calendar and provide access to your e-mail. When choosing a smart phone, it pays to do your research beforehand to be sure you purchase a device that is compatible with Library and CITES provided services.
The following information is provided to help you make an educated decision on such a purchase. Library IT offers this information for your benefit, but this does not imply any responsibility upon Library IT or guarantee any level of results. Also, please note that Library IT staff cannot help you set up or maintain personally owned equipment of any type.
We do not use MS Exchange for our e-mail. To connect to your e-mail, your phone must support establishing an IMAP connection with SSL enabled (port 993): Express.cites.uiuc.edu
We have the Oracle Calendar 9.0.4.2 system. We use the Oracle Calendar Sync 9.0.4.2 for Palm or the Oracle Calendar Sync 9.0.4.2 for Pocket PC to establish the synchronization between the PDA and the calendar service. This software is an additional purchase of currently $16.50 through the Campus WebStore.
Success in synchronizing with the Calendar system has been intermittent in Library IT’s experience. Windows Mobile 5 and 6 have historically not been able to synchronize. Treo’s have the option of a Palm operating system or a Windows Mobile, the Treo 700p (Palm OS) is the latest device that has successfully been tested and configured to connect to the calendar system.
If your smart phone is capable of browsing the web, you can browse to the respective sites for full interaction with your e-mail and calendar.
