G Drive, H Drive & Library Web Server
- You have access to files stored in Group directory (G: drive), Home directory (H: drive) and library web server (Cooper) from off-campus locations.
- You can access them only after your computer is connected to the UIUC network through either CITES VPN connection or CITES Dialup connection. Please follow the instructions given on either website to configure the connection properly. If you have problems, please contact the CITES Help Desk at (217) 244-7000 or (800) 531-2531.
- System requirements for accessing these library servers are Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, or Vista. (Note: Windows 95, 98, and ME will not work.)
Additional Configuration
- Some additional configuration makes it easier for connecting to a particular server. Please configure the WINS server addresses on your machine. Depending on the operating system, the location is somewhat varied.
- Typically you should try to look under the “My Network Places” or “Network Neighborhood” properties, then choose properties for your connection and TCP/IP properties. The WINS settings are under an “advanced” button in 2000 and XP and under one of the tabs for NT. The servers should be 128.174.5.30 and 128.174.36.251.
- The same window is also where there is a setting for “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”. This must be selected.
Accessing a particular network drive from a PC
- To connect to a network drive, click on the start menu and choose “run”, then depending on which network drive you wish to connect to, type in one of the following lines (only the text in bold):
- Group directory (G: drive) \\libsys5.library.uiuc.edu\groupfiles
- Home directory (H: drive) \\libsys5.library.uiuc.edu\username$
- Library web server (Cooper) \\cooper.library.uiuc.edu\deptwebshare
- Please note: the italicized items need to be replaced with your own specific information, and the $ sign must be added after your username if you are trying to connect to the home directory (H: drive).
- You will be prompted for username and password. Your username is your Active Directory account and in the format of UIUC\username. Your password is your Active Directory password.
Accessing a particular network drive from a Mac
- You can use the Mac's 'Connect to Server' function to access a network drive.
- To find "Connect to Server", with the Finder selected, click the Go menu and look at the bottom of the menu, "Connect to Server" is the last item on the list.
- Click "Connect to Server" and a new window will open. Under the Server Address, depending which network drive you want to connect, enter one of the following:
- H drive: smb://libsys5.library.uiuc.edu/NetID$
- G drive: smb://libsys5.library.uiuc.edu/groupfiles
- Cooper: smb://cooper.library.uiuc.edu/deptwebshare
- Please note: the italicized items need to be replaced with your own specific information, and the $ sign must be added after your username if you are trying to connect to the home directory (H: drive).
- Click the plus (+) button to add it to your Favorite Servers if you'd like.
- Click the Connect button and another window will pop-up to authenticate.
- Under "Workgroup or Domain", enter: UIUC
- Under "Name", enter your NetID
- Under "Password", enteryour active directory password
- Hit OK and the drive should show up on the desktop.
Security Issue
- Since the setting “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP” is needed to connect to network shares on the library servers, any drives you have shared on your computer are also made available over a TCP/IP connection. This poses a problem if you have “File and Printer Sharing” enabled on your computer. If you do not need to share a file or printers from your computer, uninstall or disable this service.
- Using ZoneAlarm or some other personal firewall program is also an option to protect your system while connected to the internet. If you have such a firewall in place, there may be some settings to configure for the connection to work properly. For example, if you are using ZoneAlarm, open ZoneAlarm, click on “Security”, click the “Advanced” button, click the “Add” button, choose “Add Host/Site” and in the “Host/Site” box type “128.174.1.98”. Perform the same steps for any server you wish to connect to ie: “libsys5.library.uiuc.edu” or “www.library.uiuc.edu”. This allows the server to send back information to your machine, including the authentication request. Consult the documentation with your personal firewall software if you are having further difficulties connecting. Hardware firewalls or internet connection sharing routers may also prevent connection unless properly configured
