Library Listservs
- Library IT maintains internal listservs to facilitate information sharing among Library staff. Depending on which group you are in, you can be included in several listservs:
- Libnews-L -- All employees are members of the Library's internal listserv.
- Libfac-L -- All Library faculty members and Academic Professionals are members of this internal Library listserv.
- Libuntenfac-L -- All untenured Library faculty are members of this internal Library listserv.
- Libcirc-L -- All Library staff who are working for circulation in the UIUC Library are members of this internal Library listserv.
- Libcat-L -- All Library staff currently doing cataloging in the UIUC Library are members of this internal Library listserv.
- Libtechserv-L -- All Library staff who are working in the technical services division are members of this internal Library listserv.
- Library IT can set up listserv (mailing list) or email alias for individual groups by request.
Questions, Subscription and Removal
- When library personnel need to request subscription to or removal from a listserv or to ask a question about a listserv, send email to:
- Listserv name-L-request@postoffice.cso.uiuc.edu
- For example, if you want to subscribe to LIBTECHSERV-L, send an email to LIBTECHSERV-L-request@postoffice.cso.uiuc.edu
- This address sends their message to the person who maintains the list. This step is necessary because the list owner needs to see the FROM: field in the user's message.
Listserv Vs. Email Alias
- Decide whether to use a listserv or an email alias
- Some advantages of a Listserv (mailing list) is immediacy and relative privacy. Messages posted to a list are typically delivered within a few minutes. A listserv should be used for a large group of people.
- An advantage of an email alias is the fact that you do not have to have an “owner” as you do for a listserv. An email alias should be used for small groups of people.
- To Request a Library Listserv to be created:
- please log a work request
- give a list name (what do you want to call your list)
- describe why you need the listserv
- To Request a Library email alias to be created:
- fill out the online Email Alias Request Form
