CIRCULATION POLICIES AND INFORMATION

RESERVE MATERIALS

All required readings for LIR classes are on reserve in the library. All reserve materials circulate for 2 hours or overnight.

  • Self-service. Students are encouraged to get their reserve readings themselves. A 3-ring binder on the circulation desk contains copies of the syllabi for all LIR courses, with the call numbers of the books and an indication of photocopied items. The reserve collection contains only those readings that faculty have asked us to put on reserve. Check the syllabus and go to the reserve shelves to find the materials. Write the following information on the circulation card in the item--your name, the date, the time you took the item--and leave the card at the circulation desk.
  • Electronic reserves. Some classes have reserve readings available online. There is a link on the library's home page to the listing of courses that have electronic reserves. There is also a link from the "Library Catalogs" page and from the online catalog introductory screen. Any reserve readings not online are available in print format in the ILIR library.
  • Borrower's responsibility. The individual whose name is on the card is responsible for the materials charged out. Should an item be passed on to another individual, it is the signer's responsibility to see to it that the name on the card is transferred.
  • Overnight use. Reserve materials cannot be checked out for overnight use until 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and must be returned not later than 9:30 a.m. the following morning. Material checked out on Friday at 4:00 p.m. is due at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. On Saturday, reserve material may be checked out at 3:00 p.m. and must be returned by 9:30 a.m. on Monday. When checking out materials for overnight use, please add your telephone number to the other information on the circulation card.
  • Holds. Holds may be placed on up to 2 reserve items for specific times during the day or for overnight use.

NONRESERVE MATERIALS

  • All cataloged library materials can be charged out, requested, or renewed on the computer system. Present the item(s) you want to borrow and your I-Card to the person at the circulation desk. Library materials may be renewed online or by telephone by calling either (217) 333-2380 or the Telephone Center at (217) 333-8400. Items that do not have holds on them may be renewed a maximum of 10 times.
  • Charged-out items are subject to recall, with a shortening of the loan period, upon request of another user or for course reserves.
  • Research assistants who will be checking out materials from other libraries for faculty members can obtain authorization cards from the Circulation Department in the main library.

OVERDUES AND FINES

A detailed discussion of the library's policies on overdues and fines can be found on the Central Circulation homepage. In general, the following policies apply:

  • Daily fines are not assessed for overdue materials; however, failure to return materials in a timely manner may result in the issuance of a bill for the item's replacement and the assessment of a nonrefundable late return fee.
  • The loan period for an item that has been recalled is shortened. Failure to return recalled items by the due date will result in a nonrefundable fine.
  • A borrower's privileges will be suspended if the borrower exceeds the library's thresholds for number of assumed lost items or amount of money owed, or has not returned a recalled item by the date specified.

Questions about overdue or recalled items from the ILIR Library's collection, or about fines and billing can be directed to Katie Dorsey at (217) 333-2380 or crdorsey@uiuc.edu.

GENERAL RULES

  • Eating in the reading rooms in the Library is not permitted. Drinking is permitted provided that beverages are kept in spill-proof containers.
  • Please do not mark or otherwise mutilate library materials. Theft of library materials is a petty offense, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and reimbursement to the library of the cost of replacing the material.
