LABORLIT: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

What is LABORLIT?
LABORLIT is a database containing references to items received in the Labor and Industrial Relations Library since January 1989. The database includes books, journal articles, pamphlet materials, ILIR theses and dissertations, government publications, working papers, reprints, microfiche, and an occasional audiovisual item. It also contains a small percentage of citations for materials that are not located in the Labor and Industrial Relations Library, but may be available in other libraries on campus. The database can be searched in various ways to retrieve lists of citations which can be printed or downloaded.

How do I access LABORLIT?
LABORLIT is only accessible from machines in the Green Room in the ILIR Library, from the ILIR computer lab (Room 49, ILIR), and from computers connected to the ILIR building network. It is NOT accessible through the Internet, from this home page, or through dialup connections. Off-campus patrons can send requests for searches by e-mail to the librarian and the results will be downloaded and delivered through the Internet.

How do I get help?
The library has prepared a handout to aid users in searching LABORLIT, called "Using LABORLIT: a Brief Guide". Copies are available in the library and in the ILIR computer lab.

DATABASES ON THE LIBRARY GATEWAY

Faculty and students in the Institute find the following article databases, accessible through the Library Gateway, to be of particular value for study and research in industrial relations and human resource management.

    • The most important databases are:
      • ABI/INFORM. ABI/INFORM began in 1971, and it contains citations and 150 word abstracts to over 2000 business and management journals published worldwide. The full text of articles is included for about 100 journals.
      • EconLit for coverage of the literature in labor economics and other areas of economics. Econlit began in 1969, and it contains citations to articles, many with abstracts, in over 400 economics journals, as well as to papers in collective volumes of essays and proceedings, books, working papers, and dissertation titles.
      • LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe for coverage of the literature in labor and employment law. Lexis-Nexis began in 1973, and it contains full text with abstracts of decisions of federal and state courts at all levels and of federal administrative agencies, full text of law journals, legal news, full text of federal and state codes and statutes, and European Union legislation and treaties.
      • PsychInfo for coverage of the literature in industrial and organizational psychology. PsychInfo contains citations, most with abstracts, to articles in about 1300 academic and professional journals, books, dissertations, and monographs in all areas of psychology and related behavioral sciences published throughout the world from 1887 onward.
    • Not as important, but also useful, are:
      • America: History and Life. Began in 1964. Contains citations with abstracts to articles on the history of the United States and Canada from over 2000 serial publications. This is a major source for research materials in labor and social history.
      • ERIC. Began in 1966. Contains citations with abstracts to materials in education and related behavioral sciences. The database contains 2 subfiles, one of research reports and one which indexes about 700 education journals. Its coverage of faculty and teacher collective bargaining, as well as of vocational and other types of training, is of particular usefulness for research in industrial relations and human resource management.
      • JSTOR. This database contains the full text in PDF format of all the articles in eleven economics journals, from the beginning of their publication to 1990/91, including the following titles, which are subscribed to by the Labor Library: American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics.
      • LegalTrac. Began in 1980. Indexes about 800 law journals, legal newspapers, legal specialty publications, bar association journals, and international legal publications. It also includes law-related articles from business and general interest journals. This is a useful source for research on labor and employment law, administrative agency regulations, and the legal aspects of human resource management and labor management relations.
      • Newspaper Indexes:
        • Alternative Press Index. Began in 1991. Contains citations with abstracts to articles on social, political, economic, and environmental causes from roughly 380 alternative, radical, and left publications.
        • Business NewsBank. Began in 1993. Provides full-text articles from over 400 business journals, newspapers, and wire services concerning issues and events at both public and private companies.
        • Wall Street Journal. Contains the full text of articles from the Eastern Edition of the newspaper primarily from 1986 to the present, as well as an archival section with older articles.
      • OneSource. Contains comprehensive corporate and industry information, including company profiles, news articles from business and trade periodicals, research reports, and financial data. Tabular information in the database can be exported to spreadsheets.
      • PAIS. Began in 1972. Contains citations to articles, books, and government documents in the areas of business, economics, law, public administration, and other social sciences. It is worldwide in scope and contains brief abstracts for many materials added after 1985. The database is particularly useful for coverage of issues related to public sector collective bargaining and legislation at both the federal and state levels.
      • Social Sciences Abstracts. Began in 1983. Contains citations with abstracts to about 350 English-language journals in the fields of anthropology, area studies, economics, environmental sciences, geography, law and criminology, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology. This is a more general social science database that supplements others that are listed here.
      • Social Sciences Citation Index. This is one of the databases included in the group, "Web of Science". Began 1997. Contains citations to literature from over 1500 journals in the social, behavioral, and related sciences. The database permits searching by cited references.
      • Sociological Abstracts. Began 1963. Contains citations, mostly with abstracts, to articles in over 1600 journals, books, conference papers, dissertations and other sources in sociology and related fields. The database is particularly useful for coverage of industrial sociology, occupational studies, gender studies, and class and ethnic studies.
      • Statistical Universe. Began 1960. This database indexes statistical information contained in U.S., state, international, and intergovernmental statistical sources. Each record includes the title, bibliographic information, subject, and an abstract of the contents of the statistical information, frequently including a list of tables and charts. Links to web-based full text publications are included, if available.
      • Wilson Select Plus. This database contains citations with abstracts to articles in over 800 journals from several different Wilson databases including Wilson Business Abstracts. Coverage is primarily from 1994 to the present, and the articles are available online in full text.
      • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. This database contains indexing and abstracts for material from over 1000 journals in political science and its related disciplines, international relations, law, and public administration. This can be useful for research on changes in legislation and on company and union political activity.

Other databases, even those in the physical sciences and the humanities, may have relevant information. For example, engineering databases can contain sources relating to unionization and collective bargaining of engineers and scientists or human resource management issues in research and development organizations. A complete list of databases available through Illinet Online can be found on the Library Gateway home page. Click on the Illinois Library Gateway icon at the top of this page to go to the list.
